Ifi Soccer Team Halts Pembroke’s Unbeaten String; Meet Rugged Conference Foe Lynchburg Fridav Uy MIKE MEECH The St. Andrews soccer team ended Pembroke’s unbeaten streak with a hard fought 2-1 victory here Tuesday. The Knights opened the con test with a new five man of fensive alignment with talented freshman Don Cooper at center forward. After some five minutes of the game Coach Rufus Hackney shifted back to the familiar 4-3-3-1 alignment and continued it for the rest of the afternoon. The teams battled to a score less tie in the first half. The Knight defense was led by center fullback Dann Griffiths and the always tough goalie Craig Han nas. The Knights had one ex cellent scoring opportunity early in the second quarter when a Pembroke fullback was called for tripping SA’s left wing Cooper Inside of the penalty area. Hannas was summoned from the nets to attempt the penalty kick. He ripped a shot toward the upper right portion of the Brave goal which the opposing goalie deflected for the save keeping the game scoreless. The third quarter was only several minutes old when Knight forward Bob Welch took a pass from halfback A1 Thompson and looped a fifteen yard shot over the leaping Pembroke goalie’s head for a 1-0 SA lead. Late In the quarter Pembroke tied the game on a goal by their forward Kelly. The fourth and final quarter was again dominated by the op posing defensive units. Late in the period however, Knight cen ter halfback Chris Johnson broke the deadlock and con verted a Cooper corner kick into the game winning score for the Knights. Pembroke had one final chance to tie the game when a pushing off violation was called on a Knight defender in the penalty area giving the Braves a penalty kick. Hannas cooly scooped up the attempted shot and the Knights ran out the clock to preserve their fourth victory. The booters are now 4-1 for the season and they journey to Lynchburg Friday for what should be a tough conference battle. The game is slated to begin at 3 p.m. Goals scored thus far this season were made by the follow ing: Ralph Nesbit, 5 Randy Wellford, 5 John Daniel, 3 Bob Welch, 2 Dann Griffiths, 2 Don Cooper, 1 Chris Johnson, 1 KM To Battle All-Stars; Finish Season Unbeaten The Intramural football sea son ended on Monday and Kings Mountain emerged as the first unbeaten winner in school his tory. On Friday, October 24 the champion Mountaineers will meet an all-star team com posed of players from theother three men’s dorms. The fallowing players have beeii pamed to the All-Star contingent: Herb Rrizer, David SlncWr, David Ainslle, Dor man FawJey, Denny Dodson and Dave Landis from Mecklen burg; Slg Johnson, Bob Rich, Kemp Llttlepage, David Dixon, Bill Carper, Steve Lltchford and Phil; Blundell from Orange; and Mac Jones, Riley Erwin and Lavls Bowden from Winston Salem, The' game will be played on the Intramural field behind Mecklenburg and Kings Moun tain. Game time Is 4 p.m. Kings Mountain’s strong de fensive unit did not allow a touchdown in its last six games. Ken McGinnis anchored the de fense at Middle linebacker while Gary Gredleln, Glenn Hundert- mark and Harry Kraly led the strong secondary.
