DAV© BEALE — a native of Greenville, B.C., David is majoring in English. He was President of Mecklenburg Dorm last year and a member of the Senate. The town of St. Andrews has Ijeen a place of character and distinction since the sixth cen tury when it was a stronghold of the Pictish Kings and con tained an influential monastery of the Celtic Church. In the eighth century it t>ecame the focus of the national cult of St Andrew and from shortl^y alter A.D. 900 the seat of the most important Scottish bis hopric, raised to the di^xty of an archbishopric in 147^ and thus ranked alongside Can- turbury in importance in Bri- Earlier work in higher educa tion resulted in the establish ment of . the University in 1411 and the charter ofthe Universi^ of St. Andrews was confirmed in 1413 by Pope Benedict XIII. For centuries the most im- portant university in Scotland, its coastland location kept it in touch with all the vital move ments on the European con tinent, so much so that one of its colleges, the CoUege of St. Leonard founded in 1512, became popularly identified with the Lutheran Reformation to the point that a sixteenth century cliche to refer to a Scottish adherent of the “Lutheran heresy” was: “Yee have drunken of Sanct Leonard’s well.” Today St. Andrews stands as one of, if not the last of the medieval university towns. During term it draws its live lihood from its international reputation and position in edu cation, and during the vacation months from its resort facili ties with much of this emphasis on the local Royal and Ancient Golf Club, the international cap ital of this game. With a popu lation of just ten thousand it has the facilities of a much larger place. As a university city, in particular, it has quali ties of intimacy and charm that make it unique in Britain. J, Steven Watson, Principal (President) of Scotland’s his toric University of St. Andrews, will be the guest of St. Andrews Presbyterian College at a gen eral convocation Thursday evening, October 26.
