EDITORIAL St. Andrews Becomes A Less Well-Kept Secret The news is big. Little or nothing else could have prompted the writing of an editorial this close to press time. That we are under consideration, no scratch that, toat we are the obvious front-nmners and favorites to be hosting this year’s Governor’s School is a recognition ofmany things. It is a recognition of the quality of instruction here about. For along time St. Andrews has been mentioned in undergraduate circles in the same breath as Duke and Wake Forest by those who know. It is a recognition of the facilities here, which while we often complain about them, are far superior to many across the state. But most of all it is an indication that we are back on the track financially. They juk don’t put Governor’s Schools in places that look like they’re about to fold up and go out of the business. Watch the news tonight! We’re going to get the statewide publicility and the Governor may well catch a lot oc criticism for coming out in favor of giving such a program to a private school. But we think that his decision must ultimately be vindicated, that we are indeed the type of place you need for this type of experience. Governor’s School If the decision is finalized it can be expected that there will be planning teams on site within the very near future, as the Governor’s School is scheduled to open this year on July 2. Since its inception in the term of Governor Teriy Sanford (1961-1965) the Governor’s School has been located at Salem College in Winston-Salem. The move to St. Andrews would be the first for the prestigious summer school. Calendar, Cont. Vardell. -Forum Series Presents: Senator McNeill Smith, 19th NC District 8 p.m. Avinger. TUESDAY -C.U.B. BMBBBWiwww mE LANCE 3/2178 TWO President Calls For Energy Savings To The Editor: As we anxiously count down the days untU Bacchanalia, we have been wondering what kind of music will grace the wonderful occasion of the Launching. We seniors in particular look forward to our last Launching, knowing that we will always remember that special night. One can imagine our outrage and disappointment when our CUB representative informed the ‘Orange Dorm Council members that were present at our meeting on Tuesday about the chosen band. Some folks may recall the pseudo-Lawrence Welk and often off- key Lloyd Hinson Band and their performance at the 1975 Launching (The current seniors’ freshman year). Some how the thought of out-of-key easy-listening music doesn’t make us quiver with anticipation; rather, it makes us ill. Rumor has it that the CUB has already booked the Lloyd Hinson Band. We do not know if this is fact, but we think that the decision should be retracted and the student body be given a chance to voice its opinion. In all probability, the students will disagree with the CUB’s choice. We feel that the CUB should reconsider and poll the students for a more popular choice. Also, we’d like to suggest to the students to ask their dorm social chairpersons to voice their opinions at the next meeting of the CUB. The social chairpersons are elected to represent the wishes of the dorm, and if the dorm residents are opposed tothe choice, that opposition should be voiced by the social chairperson. The St. Andrews community should be able to choose the music they want to hear at this special function. Lisa Wollman Shiela C. I am enrolled in ES 202 in which each student in the course is asked to work on a project of their own choosing. What I propose to do is collect all the waste paper I can on this campus and recycle it in a sense by binding it into notebooks and distributing these notebooks to students next fall at little or no cost to the student. My purpose in doing this is not so much to show how much people are wasting as to show what can be done with paper we would normally throw away. I’m not going to try and point an accusing finger at someone or some group. I simply want to show what can be done with our various publications (memos, handouts, surveys, etc.) with a little effort on my part. Perhaps resulting from this will be some club or other group that would be willing to perform this service on a regular basis, but that is just an outside possibility and not within the scope of this proposal. I have asked that I be allowed to place collecting boxes at various places around campus to gather the paper from as many possible sources. There are, however, some qualifications as to the paper I can use. I can use paper that has only been printed on one side. It can be any color and any length but it must be at least 9” inches wide (that’s normal). I cannot use newspaper, magazines, computer paper or card board, only paper such as SAS , surveys or WSAP News Briefs. If, whenever you acquire some of this paper and you’re on the verge of tossing it into the trashcan. Don’t. Stop what you’re doing im mediately and run to your nearest collective box and let fly with all your paper there. Everybody’s cooperation will be appreciated by everybody. Thank you, Jeff Walker To The Editor: Your help is needed conserve energy. “ This year, the ener»„ portion of St. Andrew? operatmg budget is almost ! quarter of a milUon doll r ($250,000). The budget figu^. was reached on the basisT several assumptions th? ™f//"Portantofwhi;har that the unit cost of enersv was likely to increase, a that we at St. Andrews eoui reduce our consumption keeping our expenditures virtually level between ta year and this year. Unfortunately, our con sumption of electricity during the current year is running considerably ahead of con sumption during 1976-77. If we continue to assume electricity during the last three months of our fiscal year (March, April and May) at present rates, we will use aj> proximately 500,000 kilowatt- hours more this year t_.. last, about ten percent in crease. Given the unit cost and the patters of our usage, our expenditures for elet tricity could exceed our budgeted amount by $25,00 If each one of us is sensitive to energy waste, we reduce our usa^e dramatically during the next three months. A small gesture by each person in the St. Andrews community multiplied by our 700 faculty, students and staff can make a large difference in our usage. When you leave a room please turn off the lights and the heater fan. Please do not open windows to cool a room. Please reduce your own in dividual thermostat (if you are one of the lucky^ones whose the thermostat works) by several degrees. If we conserve energy, we will not only help ourselves, but also do our part to ease the energy consumption pressures brought about the shortage of coal at this time. Thanks very much for your help.
