The opinions expressed in THE LANCE are not necessarily | those of St Andrews Presbyterian College. [ Editorial Where Is Our Credit Going? St. Andrews lives and exists on good will AND good credit, both on campus and in town. Until the past few weeks there were relatively few problems along this line, Euid then something very curious started to happen: businesses in town have begun to stop taking persMiid diecks. It wasn’t too bad when there were only a few places like Weiner King (who writes a check for hog dogs anyway?) whidi didn’t believe in anything except cold cash, but when it’s suddenly Holly Farms ri^t outside the gate, or the old standby McDonalds, we’ve got a slightly more serious situation. One area businessman who came to Laurinburg from points further North cranmented last week that one of the things he liked the best about living here was that people trusted people. TTie ironic thing is that he was speaking precisely of diecks. Without the ccmvoiience of checks, he realized, the average St. Andrews student is not going to care to bother with carrying around the large amounts of cash needed to function in town, and his business would suffer. Sure, there was the occasional bad check, but the average student has always been pretty good about making up such debts, which usually resulted from bad subtraction rather than intent to defraud. As of this writing McDonalds has refused to cranment on its reasons for the sudden reversal of its check-cashine policy. Hardee’s, you will need to know, still takes checks for the amount of purchase. This is a subtle sort of threat to our lifestyle here, and the kind of thing we’d like to see PIRG or the CCC or the Student Life Office or SOMEBODY do something about. What do Jaycees mean to me.. It’s hard to put it into words. After seven years of Jaycee life, I have had many experiences that have enriched my life. How can you explain the feeling of participating in a Special Olympics Projects for ttie mentally retarded and physically handicapped children, and see the children’s expressions of joy as they stand there receiving their metals. How do you describe the feeling you experience when your chapter runs a Christmas cheer project and goes house to house to un- derprivUeged children, giving them their Christmas, and see their eyes widen with ex citement as you lay the presents under the tree. Jaycees is experience, a feeling, a necessity. Come Thursday night, 6:15 p.m.. Student Union and be a part of the Jaycee Experience. Alan Dossenbach Regional Director North Carolina Jaycees Are Suite Phones Going To Return? Lank “I know Richard Lank as an extremely competent professional business of ficer,” says M.J. Williams, director of special projects for the National Association of College and University Business Officers. “His level of expertise and the ex perience he has had at Moravian College should serve St. Andrews very well.” He is a native of Wilmington, DE, but grew up in Harrisburg, PA. Mr. and Mrs. Lank have two married daughters and a son, who is a graduate student at the University of Nebraska. Dear Friends, It is unfortunate to know that at St. Andrews Com munication is not only NOT WHAT it could be, but that it is NOT AS it should be. Quite simply, I’m advocating the re-installation of the Suite Lounge Telephone System The fluidity increases ex ponentially with the re- installation of each suite phone. Perhaps only the seniors will be able to recall when suite phones were in use and likewise, when they were removed. I seem to recall them having been taken out during the early spring of ’76. At that time the reason given for their removal was the following term: financial exigency. A fair number of things were removed with the arrival of this term and the state that it denotes, but let’s stick with the phone problem. Almost three years have elapsed. Financial exigency AP PARENTLY no longer exists. It would, therefore, seem not unreasonable to expect the re- installation of suite-to-suite telephones. I’ve heard some rumblings about suite phones from some senators; action may be just round the comer. What is needed is expressed interest on an indiidual as well as a collective basis. Want a phone? You should have access to one without leaving your suite. Talk with your suite and then, with your senator.
