knights teamwork on the courts produced this return and a victonous evening against Shaw and Meredith CoUeges. (Photo by Qay Hamilton) Knights Sweep Double Match The ' St. Andrews’ volleyballers defeated the women from Shaw and Meredith colleges Monday night in Raleigh. The Knights lost the first game of the mat ch to Meredith, but went on to win two strai^t to take the match. They then defeated Shaw in two close games. St.Andrews’ record now stan ds at 4-4 overall, 2-1 in their division. The Knights lost a hard fought game, 1&-12, in the first game of the Meredith match. But then behind the floor leadership of Diana Pretz and Kim Powell, they played very strong second and third games; winning 15-9, 15-6. In the second match, the Knights met a rowdy home crowd and a consistent Shaw squad. In two very close games, the Knights relied on patience to win 15-13 each time. “We had excellent play from the front line tonight,” explained coach JHo Aim WiUiams. “Beth Oeveland, Warra Foster and Anne AUen turned in fine performances. Debbie Grant and the rest of our back line had very good games, also. They were digging up spikes all night long.” . . The Knights will be missing liz Black when they travel to UNCC for the Invitational Tournament this Friday. In last night’s match she broke her UtUe toe and wiU be out for three weeks. “This is the first time we’ve entered a tournament of this kind,” Williams continued. “Of course, not having Liz will hurt, but I think we’re ready. We have already played some of the tou^est matches on our schedule.” VWC PLAYER ANTAGONIZES BOB BIERBAUM (Photo and caption by Clay Hamilton) Wesleyan Game An Exercise In “Crowd Control” BY CLAY HAMILTON The SA-VWC matdi will probably be recorded in the soccer textbooks under the chapter heading “Crowd Control”. Spirits ran high and poured freely at the game and the Knights were about 200 strong. Imust make an aside note here. I’m not sure why they assigned me to write this. I’m not a sports writer. Anyway, VWC played a really crooked game. I should know, I saw the whole thing through a telephoto lens. Like check out that elbow in the picture of Graham Disque taking away the ball from a mediocre VWC playa-. That guy is just playing dirty .No. 8 on the VWC squat, er squad, was another cheat. No. 11 mooned the crowd proving he really doesn’t have an IQ, to speak of. So what about the Knights? They looked good. The problem was they rallied too late. At the end of the game they were making moves they should have made from the beginning. Tom Dunn, Mike Herculson, Joe Casian, and the rest of the squad were making some great fast breaks at the end. It was also toward the aid that the audience was making sonae fast breaks. I far as I remember it peaked when Joe took out this guy who had played Disco Duck on Twn Dunn. Dean Betts had to cross the field and ask everybody to move back and calm down. Talk about team spirit, these SA fans were ready to cross the field and settle up with VWC on a hand to hand combat level. Thank God nobody had hand grenades. So if you look back at it now, I would have to say, it was a great game with the Knights winning by not faUing into the trap of acting like VWC and playing a dirty game. The crowd however, gets a IMor their conduct Say, did you notice how quick VWC got on their bus? I guess I should say more but I don’t remember much details. I think the score was 2-1, their way. GRAHAM DISQUE taking the ball and an elbow. (Photo and caption by Clay Hamilton) work is innovative and superb, and the soundtrack is a brilliant audio-montage unequalled in its creative ef fect. “Citizen Kane” is con sidered by many to be a per fect film, possibly the best American film of all time. Welles’ achievement is an ex traordinary, one-of-a-kind cinematic tour-de^or'ie. You’re Welcome To It! By CLAYHAMn.TON It is with great reluctance that I write this but I have been itphing to write this column since I got here. The subject is TA; Transactional Analysis. I think it’s the greatest thing since the invention of disco clothing. It solves all my problems and helps me adust. Like the other day, this girl came up to my room and the place was a wreck. So she said something about how I ought to clean up. “Thanks mom,” I said. She was really impressed you know. 0 shre she gave me this angry quizzical look but I knew that was just her child trying to invent a new response. So I say, “Hey don’t be such a baby.” Now Tve really got her going. I think we’re right on the verge of transacting adult to adult. She looks kind of upset, but, hey, formalities never troubled me, so I say “Let’s talk man to woman just you and me.” Well she cocked her head and said in a angry monotone, “We have nothing to talk about”. And then she left. Now I know this looks like a faUure but. Hey, at least we understood each other. If you get my meaning. So if she was in the mood to play “Catch me if You can”, weU heck I could muster up a game of “Run Don’t Walk”. I think they ought to teach one heck of a lot more TA courses. One that I’ve come up with is “TA and the Mind of God”. In this course you would go through the Bible and analyze all of God’s statements to man giving particular attention to Moses (What do those Ten Commandments reaUy mean after aU?) and Jesus. And also I’ve seen a lot of TA tests, even one caUed “TA for Tots.” But as far back as I can remember I’ve never seen one for domesticated pets. So maybe we could write “TA for Pets.” Hey Kennel Qub you listening? I think the quicker we get on this the greater future the whole of mankind will enjoy (Adult). SHORT NOTES: I got an irate letter irom a uisgi-ui.ueu aim Sta)rised SA Female” concerning my mentionmg toe Miss St. An(tews contest. It seems that people are kind of hacked with the idea. But I’ve gotten thirteen contestants and expect more. The idea gang is to have a good time and raic-e some money for a good cause - kegs. There wiU be a best original costume competition, a best bee-hive hairdo competition, woret talent, most irritating presence, and cutest. I’m now askmg the dorms to chip in and help raise a $100 dollar cash pnze to be given to the winner C*i if you’re starting to write me a letter accdsmg me of sexism don’t. The Miss St. Andrews contest is open to guys too. The Writer’s Forum tonight at 6:30 in Granville is going to have student readers and it should be an excellent opportunity to find out what fellow students are doing with the arts. And of speaking of writing, Edna Ann Osmanski is lootag at Chap Book manuscripts and will soon dispen details on how to submit. The Cairn is cranking up too. The boss man is Steve Allgood and he’U look at your drawings, poems, photos, and fiction. . , * in> As usual, I would like to remind you “You re Welcome to It will answer (possibly with tongue in cheek) your questions sent to Box 174. Until next week. Knights Defeat Francis Marion The St. Andrews’ eleven _ brushed Francis Marion aside' Monday night claiming a 4-1 victory. Sophomore striker Bob Bierbaum lead the Knights, scoring a goal in each half. Darryl Miller and Gram Disque also scored as the Knights evened their record at 3-3 ■'•We simply shut them off, everyone in Blue had a good day,” remarked coach Dean Betts. “We played a very deliberate game of soccer. Our mid-iielders had an ex ceptional game. This was one win that we reaUy needed. With Pembroke coming up Thursday, we have a good chance to get a streak star- The National Teacher Examinations (NTE) will be given at St. Andrews Presbyterian College on November 11,1978. Tom Dunn faked a shot and then all owed Mac Doubles cross pass to roll between his legs giving Bierbaum a shot on the open goal. A tripping call on the Patriot defense gave Graham Disque a free shot to start the second period for St. An drews. Disque blew it by the keeper in the lower right hand comer to give the Knights a 2- 0 lead. Bierbaum then scored his fifth goal in six contests on a chip shot from a back for a 3-0 lead. The Patriots then scored their only goal of the game on a shot that took keeper Elric Loomis by sur prise. Freshman Gary Wan- namaker then slipped past the last Patriot defender and as the goalie challenged him passed off to Darryl Miller. Miller took the shot on the empty goal and scored his fif th goal of the season. St. Andrews will have two more matdies this week, hosting Pembroke on Wed nesday and College of Qiarleston on Saturday. Ihe match with Pembroke is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
