The Lance September 28, 1984 7 EVENTS Writer’s Forum, No Decorum by T. R. Beebe Imagine a place where writers could gather in an informal setting to listen, read, critique, joke...and trash. Imagine a friendly yet sizable audience of twenty to thirty lovers of the creatively written word. IM AGINE NO FURTHER! St. An drews Writer’s Forum meets every Thursday night at 8:00 in Winston Salem Dorm’s main lounge. The readings are open to any interested party (including a couple of campus canines with unusually good literary taste). The Forum features the works and readings of campus and off-campus writers from, well, from around the world. On any given Thursday night, an innocent being who wanders over to Winston can hear the works of Stephen Smith (who’s already read this semester, sorry you missed it...), Fred Chappell, Shelby Stephenson (both yet to come!) or the biology professor you have at eight tomorrow morning, the suite mate you never would have guessed writes sonnets or (heaven forbid!) you might suddenly notice your voice trembling from the podium during Open Mike. Open Mike, contrary to popular belief, is not the vagabond poet who keeps St. An drews writers supplied with egg rolls, typing paper and muse substitutes. Open Mike is every per son’s chance to share his or her writing orally with an audience of attentive and supportive peers. The Writer’s Forum weekly readings are advertised via posters in L.A., Vardell and Belk Center. Look for the brown paper an nouncements by Wednesday (at the latest) of each week and watch the Lance for further information and reviews. Further information can be squeezed out of Todd Heritage (box 351, ext. 437) or Milton Showalter (box 421, ext. 455), co-directors of this year’s Forum. Good News Claudia Arnold reading a novel she’s writing. Due to the dedication and cooperation of some of the upper- level science students, the John Blue Laboratory is now open at night. On Sunday through Thursday from seven o’clock p.m. until midnight, the lab will be open to anyone desir ing entry. Students are expected to follow all safety regulations and any other rules that apply. The two Lab Assistants on duty each night will be in charge and ready to assist you if you have any problems. Please be sure that you are ready to leave by midnight so that the lab can be lock ed on time. This year’s Lab Assistants hope that you will enjoy the priviledge of longer lab hours and wish you the best of luck in the coming year.
