pages THE LANCE October 5, 1988 Korea, from page 1 ‘Metaphysics’ and a junior/senior seminar in philosophy,” said Chung. “Here students are very outgoing — expressing their views and differences. “Here I feel more comfortable with my relationship with students. I’m getting more responses; when they like what I m saying the show it; and when they don t like what I’m saying they show it.” Much ofthe unresponsiveness of his Korean students, Chung blames on the large size of Korean universities’ classes. He said there are up to 600 students in some classes. But Chung sees a lot of hope for his students in Korea. The new government is allowing more and more open dialogue. And leaders are beginning to listen to their people. “I am cautiously optimistic,” he said. “The present government seems inter ested in moving towards the democratization that the people want. “After the Olympics, the picture should come clear, because the temporary peace between opposing factions will have to become more permanent — compromises will have to made on both sides, I think, for peace’s sake.” Then the world would see a true baptism of Korea, Chung said. Debate, from page 2 ber.” Voters won’t really think the Demo cratic candidate personally stands for abortion (he is an Orthodox Catholic, after all), al though he believes the choice ultimately should come down to the woman involved. For that matter (this is for the Repub licans in our audience), a similarly narrow at tack on persons was demonstfated when Dukakis implied the Reagan administration knew of Noriega’s drug dealings, but negoti ated with him anyway. The U.S. did recognize Noriega. However, this point should make no more im plications on Bush’s morality than the card- carrying” comment should have made on that of Dukakis. All considered, I think that what the candidates say should be more closely exam ined before it is taken seriously. Do you think I ’ m making a mountain out of a molehill?? Well, you’d be surprised at how many decisions are made in the voting booth on the basis of assumed misinformation. And I’m talking about the kind of de cisions that fill the Head Office of our country. Tri-Beta, from page 3 lake as an ecosystem that starts at the micro scopic level with plankton. Diquatkillsplank- ton, and without plankton the whole lake suf fers. Other plant life, such as lilly pads, also suffers from the use of Diquat. The chemical is only effective for about a year, which meant annual treatments for the lake. Not only is this an expensive venture, it is also a shock for all the organisms of the lake. If the lake were left alone, it would look like the lower lake, which has had no treatments. Both school representatives and North Carolina officials have had an ongoing study of the lake which indicated that grass carp would be the best way to eliminate the bladderwort These studies made it easier for the school to obtain the required permit one must have in order to stock a lake with these fish. The grass carp are vegetarians, and have been shown to be effective controllers of many aquatic “weeds,” such as Elodea, Pidg- eongrass, Bladderwort, Fanwort, and many others. Since the fish are vegetarians, it is un likely that they will be caught by people fish ing in the lake. The fish will be kept in the lake because there is a beaver dam at one end and a man-made barrier at the other. Another advantage of this type of fish is that they are sterile. While there is an abundance of blad derwort this year, in the years to come, the fish Death Row prisoner, Caucasian male, age 42, desires correspondence with either male or female college students. Wants to form a friendly relation ship and more or less just exchange past ex periences and ideas. Will answer all letters and exchange pictures. If interested, write to: Jim Jeffers P.O. Box B-38604 Florence, Arizona 85232 will decrease the supply. If they were fertile, they would overpopulate the lake. It is never a good idea to overpopu late a lake with any species. The fish generally live twenty years, so they will be around for a while. Important to remember is that the fish will not provide immediate results. They have to establish themselves in the lake and grow a little before they can make a major reduction in the amount of bladderwort in the lake. Within five years, the results should be evident. Tri Beta will be monitering the lake each year to see how the fish are affecting the ecology of the water. Tests will be made on water quality, soil quality, microorganisms (plankton and other bacteria), vegetation, mammals and fish population. It is predicted that the populations of game fish will increase as the carp clear out room for more fish beds. Tri Beta believes that the carp will restore Lake Ansley Moore to a healthy state over the next several years. Biological Trivia Did you know...? 1. Did you know that a Douglas Fir is not a pine? It is a false Hemlock! 2. Did you know that a peanut is not a nut? It is really a bean! 3. How about that Panda Bear? Did you know it is not a bear? G iant Pandas are actually related to both the lesser pandas and bears. These ani mals actually have an opposible thumb (such as that of the Great Apes and of Humans). This thumb sets them apart from both groups. Special Thanks...to Norm Melvin, who provided many details about the ecology of the lake. 1! _.ir O ;\Aa\\enqe a ^,e\p poo K vS s\«'Vs. ooA/'vce, nr\de I \
