THE LANCE December Opinion Misogyny Rears Its Ugly Head on Campus In a past issue of The Lance, Mary Griggs remarked on the subtle discrimination that is now part of the St. Andrews community. As an example, Griggs cited the plenary incident where a professor singled out two female students for not paying attention and later questioned them as to their gender. I, as well as many other students, had the misfortune to witness that degrading event. I was more embar rassed for the professor then I was for the students. To get caught displaying misogynist tendencies in public is certaintly not the most enviable position to be in. I find it a little hard to believe that Avinger is that colossal that people can't be distinguished. If the shoe were on the other foot, how many men would have stood up to being called "ladies" by a respected educator in front of their peers? Ah, yes, sexism has once again reared its ugly head on campus. It is most especially notable when a person of authority uses it like weapon on unsuspecting students and then gets away with it. Those "enlight ened" few that are well-educated and have enough sense of good manners and taste are supposed to be a some sort of role models. How are we expected to understand the importance of equality when it is disregarded by certain administrators and faculty? According to one woman involved in the incident, no apology or clarity of point had been issued afterwards. Or was there a point at all? Whatever the reasoning, its purpose was lost on me. Those with whom I discussed the incident also could not come up with any answers but did mention that they too were not amused by the whole scene. After all, what good is a statement when it is not presented as one and therefore, freely left up to speculation. None of us, male or female, are safe when we can be opened up to humiliation and abuse by those we sup posedly look up to and respect. Incidents as blatantly discriminatory as this one are slowly setting precedence for bigger and more oppres sive measures by those who give little regard to other people's feelings. Misogyny has no place in the classroom. We pay too much to go to this school to have to put up with it. No matter how important a point to be made, it has no business being made at all when it is at the expense of others. Deborah Kelly Time to Revise the Directory I was walking through LA the other day and I noticed something odd. On the directory board, which is supposed to list all professors, deans, etc. and their respective offices, I saw the name B. McCoy. This is odd because B. McCoy has not been here since my freshman year. Further examination of this directory lead me to believe that the thing has not been updated in two years—except for two names. Those are Dean Greer and President Reuschling. It is appropriate that these names be listed properly, but don’t you think it is time to revise this directory? How are freshmen supposed to find certain offices of professors that have changed buildings or hallways in the past two years? And, more important, how are visitors to the college supposed to find an office if it is not correctly noted? Revising this board is something that should take place at least once a year. I wonder if it will happen before I graduate in Spring 90? Lisa Chassy The opinions expressed on these pages are not necessarily those of The Lance but are of the signed individuals.
