1-0 in District
Knights Down Wingate
Michael Roberts
Through the first three
games of this season, the
Knights showed that they
could score. They showed
that they could play hard
defense. They showed that
they had bench scoring.
They showed that they
could play against a Divi
sion I team. Monday night,
they showed that they have
character.
Under third-year coach
Mark Simons, the St. An
drews Knights have started
1-0 in the District. Monday
night, playing Wingate at
home, the Knights managed
to rally from a five point
deficit, with less than thirty
seconds to go, to send the
game into overtime. A
three-point bucket by Wen
dell Staton, and an off-bal-
ance, one-handed shot,
darting through the lane, by
Mark English gave the
Knights a reprieve. The
Knights were too much for
Wingate in the overtime
period, and they emerged
victorious, 97-90.
After the victory. Coach
Simons stated that his team
showed a lot of class. "This
was an important game, and
it should boost our confi
dence," said Simons. Clutch
free throws by David
Saltn\an, who had a team
high 25, helped ice the vic
tory. "Salt played an out
standing game," said Si
mons. "He hit some really
big free throws, and hit
some great shots to keep us
in the game." Four Knights
scored in double figures,
with Eric Shelton adding 19,
John Davis with 18, and
Mark English with 16.
The Kiughts can finally
field a squad with experi
ence, starting three juniors
and a senior. Coach Simons
stated that he feels the
backcourt is the strength of
the team. The loss of All-
Conference performer Dave
Simons is expected to be felt
in the rebounding depart
ment. Simons stated that
this means added responsi
bility for starting center
John Davis. Simons added
that although the backcourt
is the strength of the team,
John Davis is the heart, and
it will be important to get
him involved offensively in
each game.
Senior David Saltman had
added scoring from the
bench, scoring over twenty
points in two of the Knights'
four contests. "It's good to
have a man come off the
bench who is instant of
fense," said Simons. "When
Salt's in the game, we want
him to shoot."
Rebounding support is
expected to come trom
Sophomore Scott Stipsits
and newcomer Shawn
Colquiett. "Stipsits is play
ing the role we need him to
play, and Shawn can help us
wi^ scoring and rebound
ing," said Simons.
The Knights started the
season with a victory over
Coker College, with point
guard Mark English hitting
22. Theirrecord of 2-2 might
easily be 4-0, but for an over
time loss to Queens College,
and a narrow loss to Divi
sion I William and Mary.
Against Queens College, the
Knights saw a double figure
lead disappear in the last
seven minutes. Coach Si
mons felt that the Knights
outplayed William and
Mary, but could not convert
the free-throws down the
stretch to notch the victory.
The Knights have been
picked to finish last in the
conference this year. Last
year they were also picked
to finish last, and not only
finished in the middle of the
pack and attained a .500
record, but knocked off top
ten ranked High Point Col
lege on their home court. So
Coach Simons is not really
paying much attention to
what is being said about a
team that he feels will be
"definitely hard to beat."

The St. Andrews Cross
Country team sent three
runners to the National
Meet held in Wisconsin last
weekend.
Tripp Whitener, Becky
Loffert, and Dan Auman
finsihed in the top twelve in
the district to qualify for the
national event.
The trio competed against
more than three hundred
runners from across the
country. In Wisconsin, the
runners encountered cold
weather and a hilly course
which had a negative effect
on the team, according to
Dan Auman.
Becky Loffert suffered a
stress fracture and was un
able to complete the race.
Auman stated that they
learned much from compet
ing with the nations best,
and hope to use this expert
ence to help them next year.
