MONDAY, JANUARY 17, 1955 THE SKIRL PAGE 3 from THE CONSERVATORY by JULIA NAUZLE Choral Club Choosing new robes for per formances was a very serious and important event for the members of the college Chorus. Every endeavor was made to make the decision on Decem ber 14 as uncnmplex and as fair as possible. A fashion show script was written and nar rated by Joyce Thigpen, vice- president in charge of robes, and appropiate music was fur nished by Gaddis McDonald. Members of the chorus mo delled the lovely sample robes in order that the selections might be based upon mateiral, style, color, and over-all ap pearance under lights. Of the seven styles modelled, three were Cassock and Cotta style and four were academic type. The only colors considered were hlaek and various shades of blue. Upon comparing Cossock and Cotta style with academic robes, it seemed the opinion of those making their selection, that the academic robes would be easier to keep looking nice when the group travels. The club is very proud of the choice it made. The new robes 'Will be the “Serenade” model in commodore blue, and will be made of Shalamer FaQle, a Who’s Who In American Colleges arid Universities a V Music Major Plans To Combine Marriage And Career wrinkle resistant fabric. St. Cecelia Music Club At the January meeting of the club. Miss Bryant showed s-lides of very lovely scenery which represented some of the magnificent beauty of our west ern states. This was a special favor rendered by the new sponsor of the club in the absence of Mr. Meese who was unable to speak to the group at that time. It is hoped that ihe club will have the privilege of hearing Mr. Meese’s program on jazz music at a later meet ing. And we’re glad Alice came too. Since coming to Flora Macdonald, she has made many contributions. She has served on the student council for two years, holding the offices of secretary during her junior year, and vice-president her sen ior year. Last year Alice was a marshal, representing Zetesian Society. Also, she served as Ze- tesian’s decoration chairman for the Christmas Dance in 1953. Besides these, Alice has held other offices in various clubs on our campus. At present, she is president of the college Choral Club. And what is her favorite past time? Why, writing to Junius and listening to records, especially since Christmas! (Incidentally, she has a new record player v/hich was a very special gift.) Strange as it may seem, Alice’s most embarrassing moment came the day she was chosen for Who’s Who. This moment occur- ALICE BRANTLY red when she attempted to play the organ for the audience to march out after the honor stu dents had been tapped. Her plans for the future are quite obvious. The talented church music major will present her senior organ recital in March. A quick glance at the third fing er, left hand reveals other future plans. Alice and Junius plan to be married in June of this year. Congratulations to you, Alice Brantley, from all the students at “Flossie Mac”! If it can be said of your work that not even a competitor can find fault—you know it’s good. Fashion Trends For '55 By PEEPS Hi, there! Now that exams (ouch!) are almost here and our New Year’s Hesolutions are all broken, what can we talk about this time? Hmn, how about “Fashion Trends for ’55” as the headline sugges ted? Dior’s “flat look” is the new est rage but fashion authorities seem to think it will be as short lived as the “New Look” of a few years ago. The princess line is going to be used in many of the Spring and Summer clothes. It has been rumored that outmoded MCMILLAN’S DRUG STORE “Senring Lumbertoo Since 1880” Dial 5484 Lumberton, N. C. Powell & Robertson Expert Gulf Service PHONE 6201 RED SPRINGS, N. C. clothing will come back in vogue every seven years. You can al most believe this superstition when you view the long-waisted cocktail and evening dresses and the overblouse. Bathing suits with fur trim are sneaking into the fashion spotlight. These will be just the ^hing for the ultra-sophiscate; but to give consolation to the 'noreconventional, the plain, fit- led lines of last year’s swim suit are still good. The rope beads which you have acquired this fall will take to your summer clothes like a duck takes to water. This is the year for the wo man who craves suits; for this year there is more variety in style and color than ever before — some with longer fitted jack ets, others featuring the longer box jackets, and for the lucky few who can wear them, the very short suit jacket. Question — What would you do with culottes? Bye now. “Scotland’s Own Forever” “Annual” Staff Makes Final Plans Townsend’s Pharmacy RED SPRINGS, N. C. This is a subject which should interest all at this College with its Scottish heritage and tradi tions. Elizabeth the First is Scot land’s Queen, Though Saxons call Her “Sec ond”! Ferris The White Heather Staff is very busy putting the finishing touches on the yearbook. Febru ary 1, 1955 is the deadline for all the materials to be in to the engraver and printer. Last min ute pictures are being made, Dot Hamilton, literary editor, is busy on the copy, and Mary McCrack en, business manager, is com pleting the soliciting of ads. The sketch of the design which has been selected for the cover of this year’s book has been drawn by the manufacturers, and as this goes to press, the staff is in the process of making the final changes that seem necessary. The White Heather has taken over the Tea-Hole for six weeks with Carolyn Robinson and Ani ta Williamson in charge and the entire staff is co-operating with them.
