MARCH 14. 1955 Number 8 Student Body Chooses Able Leaders For Year 1955-1956 The student body elections, which are now well under way, began Monday Febrauary 28, when Mary Archie Brown of St. Pauls, became president of the student association. Mary Arch ie, a rising senior, has had pre vious student council experience, serving as secretary of the as-; sociation during the past year.! During the second day of elec tions, Mary McLean from Rae- ford was elected president of the Christian Association. Mary became active in the Christian Association her sophomore year when she was a prayer band leader. Last year she filled the capacity of secretary of the Chris tian Association. Incidently, Ma ry’s sister, Betty, was once presi dent of F. M. C. A. Sallie Ann Monroe from Clark- ton has been elected president of the Athletic Association. Sallie Ann was secretary her sophmore year. She has been outstanding in volleyball and basketball and has made varsity in both. She has served as captain of her class teams. Also, she was award ed a monogram her sophomore year. Shirley Thornton from Reids- ville has become editor-in-chief of the White Heather. Shirley’s literary experience at F. M. C. began when she became a meai- ber of the Writer’s Club, in which she held the office of vice- president. She has been a mem ber of the literary staff of the rine and Thistle and was editor during the past year. 'Newly Elected Officers For Coming Year Completing the elections for inembership to the Student coun cil today were the elections of the presidents of the societies, and the president of the Day Students. Election for other of ficers on the campus will follow with the election of the Editor of “The Skirl” and the “Pine and Thistle” on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. On Friday the rising Sopho more Class chose Marian Stucky to lead them through the coming year. Marian is from Nesmith, South Carolina plans to major in English. Frances Ann Williams will serve as the rising Junior Class president. Frances Ann is from Emporia, Virginia and is a mus ic major. Elected to the position of Sen ior Class president was Bonnie Bunn from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Bonnie is a history ma jor. Juniors, Seniors Sponsor Annual Dance At Flora Macdonald College On Saturday, March 12, 1955, at Flora Macdonald College a dance presented by the Junior and Senior classes was held. This dance was sponsored by the Junior and Senior classes but it was open to all students and their dates. The dance began at 8:00 p.m. and lasted until 12:00 midnight. The theme of the dance was centered around the old planta tion as shown in the movie, “Gone With the Wind.” The theme was “Tara” and all the decorations emphasized this theme. On the dark blue back ground there was a white colon ial house. In front of this a green lawn with white iron furniture, a wishing well, and an old wheel barrow filled with flowers gave the dining hall a real planta tion atmosphere. A fence sur rounded the lawn and was en twined with flowers also Music for the dancing was fur nished by Jimmy Morgan and his band from Laurel Hill. The theme song was “My Own True Love.” The figure consisted of class officers and the chairmen of the various dance committees in it. The class officers are: Presi dent, Norma Kelly; Vice-presi dent, Ann Bowden; Secretary, Mary Hale; Treasurer, Mary Mc Cracken; Tea Room Manager, Doris Dunn; Assistant Tea Room Manager, Martha Williford for dent, Frances Shaw; Vice-presi dent, Pat Ritter; Secretary, Car olina Goodman; Treasurer, Ju lia Naugle; Tea Room Manager, Bonnie Bunn; Assistant Tea Room Manager, Pat Farmer. The chairman of the dance committee were: General Chairman: Jo Mays, Senior; Bonnie Bunn, Jun ior; Decorations: Mary Hale, Sen ior; Faye Buck, Junior; Invita- ions: Ann Bowden, Senior; Gwen Fussell, Junior; Refreshments: Nan Dorman, Senior; Dotti Mor ris, Junior. The chaperons were Doctor and Mrs. Marshall Scott Wood son, Doctor and Mrs. Price H. Gwynn, Mrs. P. P. McCain, and Mr. and Mrs. Worth Currie, Jr. Jacksons To Participate In Exchange of Pulpit Dr. George D. Jackson, min ister of the First Presbyterian Church in Winchester, Virginia, will hold services at the Red Springs Presbyterian Church March 20-27. He will speak to the FMC students in a chapel program that week. Originally from Tennessee, the Rev. Jackson will be here on the Virginia-North Carolina Min isterial Exchange. His last pas torate in North Carolina was at Asheboro. .Southwestern University in Memphis, Tennessee, gave him his AB degree, and he received his B.D. degree from Union The ological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, and his M. Mr. Skin- (Continued on Page 4) Advisory Board To Meet Tuesday The Advisory Board of Flora Macdonald College will hold its annual meeting Tuesday, Mar. 15 at the college. This board is composed of groups of six wo men elected by each of the or ganization of the Women of the (Continued on page 4) chaplain in the United States Naval Reserve. In 1952 he re ceived his Th.D. from Princeton theological Seminary. While in Asheboro Dr. Jack son served as adviser to Orange Presbytery’s Senior High Fel lowship Council. His wife, the former Helen Clark of Fayette ville, served as adviser of the Notrh Carolina’s Synod’s Youth Council. New Officers To Be Installed The new officers of the stu dent association will be installed on March 21 at 6:40. The impres sive cermony will take place in the college auditorium. Old coun cil members, wearing their robes, will march in with the new mem bers. After the new officers have taken their oath, the old leaders will step down from the plat form, giving their seats to their successors. The new officers will become “full fledged” officers when they are initiated. The date of initiation is being withheld but will become known to all after the new council members have received their invitations. At present they do not know when, Vv'here, or how the initiation will be, but all have a feeling it’s “gonna be rough” .But since the new members are good sports, there’s plenty of fun in store for all. New members of the Christ ian Association Cabinet will be installed on March 23, taking the place of the regular Wednesday night Vespers program. Plans for this service are being made, and will be carried out much in the same way as in the past. Sometime after the installation service, a party will be given to honor the new officers. Miss "B" Lewis To Visit Campus Miss Bessie Conway Lewis, bet ter known as Miss “B” Lewis will be in Red Springs Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, March 15th and 16th. While here in Red Springs, she will speak in Chapel at Flora Macdonald College; to the women of the Church at the First Presbyterian Church; to two groups of stu dents in the public schools; and to a Book Club of the Commun ity- Miss “B” Lewis is a native of Staunton, Virginia. She received her A. B. degree from Mary Baldwin College and her M. R. E. from the General Assembly’s Training School in Richmond, Virginia. For a number of years she has served with the Board of Christian Education of the Presbyterian Church in the Unit ed States, Richmond, Virginia. Her present position with this Board is Director of Field Pro gram of the Executive Depart ment of Church Relations. Her headquarters are in Richmond but approximately three-fourth’s of her time is spent traveling throughout the entire General Assembly of our Southern Pres byterian Church. Miss Lewis is very much in demand as a speaker and she is considered an authority in the field of religious books.
