October, 1958 STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE NEWS LETTER Page Five S.T.C. VICTIMIZES FAYETTEVILLE 24 -6 Joseph Buggs and John “Mickey” Harper led the Pirates to a 24-6 vic tory over Fayetteville State on the local turf. This was the first Confer ence victory for the Pirates in this year’s football campaign. Early in the opening minutes of the first quarter, the Broncos capita lized on the Pirates’ penalties and went on to score. This TD was set up when the visitors intercepted Olando Hill’s second pass. On a pass from quarterback George Wilson to end Samuel Morton, the Broncos struck pay dirt. The extra-point attempt was futile. The scoreboard at the end of the first quarter registered 6-0 in fav or of the Broncos. The Pirates did not score until the opening minutes of the second c]uart- er when Horace “Hurricane” Gordon recovered a Fayetteville fumble on the four. On three attempts Newport News’ flashy halfback, Joseph Buggs, scored and ran for the extra point. Near the close of the second quarter the Pirates marched 65 yards to score, with Buggs chalking up 12 and 33 yards. Freshman halfback John “Mick ey” Harper, dashed over from the eleven, but missed in his extra-point attempt. Elizabeth City took a 14- 6 lead going into halftime. The Pirates’ forward wall, including such stars as Gordon, Jones, Gibbs, Hart, Matthews, Long, Purvis and Carr, pushed the Broncos back to the (i-yard line and forced them to kick. Wilson could not hold on to the slip ping ball, but chose to cover it in the end zone. ELIZABETH CITY TEACHERS COLLEGE TRIUMPHS OVER CLAFLIN Freshman halfback John “Mickey” Harper and junior halfback Joseph “Speedy” Buggs, led the Ehzabeth City Pirates to a 26-0 victory over the Claflin University Yellow-Jackets. The first touchdown was made by John “Mickey” Harper, a flashy 170 pound halfback, who raced 16 yards to tally. Fred Hall’s pass to Bobby Carr was good for two points. An interception of Frank Lowrey’s pass by William Matthews placed the ball on Clafin’s 36. Once again, “Mick ey” was given the ball and raced 27 yards before being stopped short of the goal line. On the next play, he galloped 13 yards for his second T.D. of the game. An immovable line consisting of; Horace “Hurricane” Gordon, Jones, Purvis, Gibbs and Carr paced the for ward wall. Pass defense standouts were Mathews, Buggs and Hill cli maxed the game with an interception and raced for 70 yards. Elizabeth City, after collecting an easy 2 points, came back to march 44 yards, which was climaxed by a 30- yard pass play from Freddie Hall to “Marvelous” Marvin Trotman. Hall’s pass for the extra point was short of the mark. It was not long before the Pirates terminated their scoring as they fought well, defensively, to re ceive another safety. The final score was 24-6 in favor of the Pirates. SUPPORT THE FOOTBALL TEAM Elizabeth City State Teachers College 1958 FOOTBALL ROSTER Name Pos. wt. Hometown Class Berry, William G 178 Trenton, N. C.
