* * * * * * * * * * REFLECTIONS ELEY IS ELECTED TO STATE OFFICE CONFERENCE AT Student Of The Month Is Editor Lemuel Eley, a Junior Social Science major at Elizabeth City State Uni versity recently won the 1972-73 State presiden cy of the Student North Carolina Association of Education at a coa^erence held in Greensboro.N.C. The Student NorthCar- olina Association of Ed ucators is the State or ganization for Student educators, formerly Stu dent National Education Association, the organj- zatioa includes member ship from practically ev ery North Carolina Uni versity. Backed by the P. W. Moore Chapter, Mr. Eley campaigned for the State office and won it. The conference was held on Saturday, April 7, 1972, Mr. Eley will act as president over all the SNCAE chapters in North Carolina. A very capable individual, Lemuel has been listed as an Out standing Student Leader in America, 1971-72, he is president of Gamma Rho Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Super intendent of University Sunday School and Busi ness Manager of the Com pass, He is President of the Junior Class and vice - president of Uni versity Center. He is al so listed as a member of Who’s Who Among Greek Fraternities and Sorori ties of America. The State meeting was held in conjuction with the North Carolina Associa tion of Educators meeting April 6-8, 1972. The total membership IS the of the organization 1870. Mr. Eley is first black president of the newly merged organiza tion. Student North Car olina Association of Edu cators is in its second year since the merger of the white and black stu dent education associa tions. Mrs. Ruth Jones, a graduate of Elizabeth City State University, is the out-going president of North Carolina Associa tion of Educators. Larry Alston, a Senior Social Science major is the out going state Vice-Pres ident and Pedro Holley, the cluster leader for eastern North Carolina. Mrs. Shirley Chisholm addressed the delega tions Friday evening at the Greensboro Coli seum. SGA Performs Traditional African Ceremonies For Miss ECSU Student Government Association and the Jun ior Class performed the Coronation Ball this year in traditional African. Following the pattern set by SGA president Eddie Davis, the ceremony was very colorful and beauti ful and so was the coro nation ball itself. One of the highlights of the ceremony was the ceremony of the stools. This ceremony is a ba sic carryover from last year. The ceremony of the seven stools is sym bolic to the out-going and in-coming queens. The queen passes from stool to stool making a sacred commitment at each stool. The ritual is con ducted with low lighting in strictly African decora tion and design. Darryl Morris, outgoing presi dent of the Student Gov ernment Association and the nomination commit tee continued the tradi tion and therefore kept the student body and the candidates in suspicion for two weeks. The an nouncement of the new queen was therefore ex citing and rewarding.The out-going Miss ECSU Miss Carol Ann Haw kins, a Senior Business Major crowned the new queen, both sisters very beautifully donned in Af rican print. The traditional Afri can attire was used for the coronation. Sisters and Brothers wore Das- hikis and sandals. The color and beauty added to the momentous and me morable event. The presentation of the new queen and runner ups, the presentation of gifts to the queen and other ac tivities added to the sym bolism of the blackness Retiring Educator Is Honored The Kappa Delta Chap ter of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Educa tion and the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society honor ed Dr. Ernest A. Finney, Director of Summer School and Acting Chair man of the Department of Education on April 25, 1972, Dr. Finney will re tire from the teaching profession at the end of the summer school ses sions. He is a member and as advisor to both organizations. The organizations hon ored and presented Dr. Finney with gifts at the Vicki Villa Restaurant on Highway 17 bypass. Dr. Finney was also honored by the members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fra ternity the same evening in the University Center. At this time the bro thers of Alpha Phi Alpha made presentations to Dr. Finney expressing their appreciation for his in terest in the undergrad uate and graduate chap ter of Alpha Phi Alpha. Dr. Finney was again honored on Friday night April 28th at 6:30 p.m. by the faculty, staff and administration of the in stitution in Moore Hall. At this time Dr. Finney received more gifts, words of gratitude and appreciation from all phases of the University, Dr, Finney is formerly Director of Student Teaching at ECSU. He received his educational training at South Caro lina State College, Mor ris College, Claflin Col lege and Cornell Univer - sity. Dr, Finney has giv en many hours of service to the students and the University. His dedica tion to education reflects the integrity and quality of the Department of Ed ucation and the Summer School. Dr. Finney will retire to his South Carolina home and enjoy life with his wife and daughter. Robert is a very hard working, liberal minded student leader at the Uni versity. Aside from being editor of the Compass, he is also president of the International Eliza beth City State University Choir, of which he serv ed as vice president last year, he is president of United Campus Religious Fellowship; President of Delta Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Gamma Na tional Honorary Journa lism Fraternity, Inc. He is also Historian for the Senior Class. He is a member of the Student North Carolina Association of Educators, the Publications Com mittee,the Advisory Coun cil, the Social Science Club. He is a member of the Kappa Delta Chap ter of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Educa tion and Alpha Kappa chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor So ciety. He was selected to Who’s Who Among Stu dents in American Col leges and universities in 1971 and repeated the honor in 1972. Robert has been admit ted to State University of New York at Bingham ton with a $4500 Graduate Scholarship for Doctoral Study. He has also been admitted to New York University with the Mar tin Luther King Fellow ship, The University of Arizona and Cornell Uni versity. Robert will at tend SUNY-Binghamtonin the fall of 1972. All the activities took place in Williams Hall Gymnasium. After the Af- ricnn cer'jrnonies, the Moments provided music. Sisters and brothers dan ced to the lively music, the funky sounds of the dynamic Moments until late, late in the night. And so in the wee hours of the morning we came to ourselves and real ized that the whole event meant another step to ward becoming that which we really are - an Afri can people. The tribal dances, poe try and all the charac teristics of the ceremony was performed with dig nity. DR. FINNEY The National Histori cal Society has extended an invitationfor member ship to Dr. Ernest A. Fin ney, Director of Summer School and Student Teach ing. This invitation has been accepted and thus this adds to the growing list of local, state, na tional and international organizations and profes sional associations to which the honoree has been extended an invita tion for membership. Dr, Finney is a member of the Department of Educa tion Faculty of Elizabeth City State University and presently is serving as Acting Chairman of the Department of Education and Director of Summer School.
