REMEMBERING THE TRAGEDY; SEPTEMBER 11,2002

It has been a little over a
year since the disaster of Sep
tember 11, 2001. Many people
believe that the tragedy was a
wake up call, one that caused
them to look at their lives in a
new light.
“What went through yo6r
mind when you first heard
about the September 11 trag
edy?” This is a question that
will probably be asked for
■ many years to come. Many
people have different views
about what happened, but the
fact is thousands of people lost
their lives in those two towers
and in remote Pennsylvania. I
asked a few of our fellow stu
dents how they felt about the
tragedy and found that their
sentiments mirrored the feel
ings of most of the people
across the nation.
“It is very tragic. You can
learn a great lesson from it,”
says John Shefton, “It changed
the perception of travel and
makes you more cautious of
the people around you.”
Marcus Parks also said
that it makes the traveling
experience different.
“It was a tragedy. It makes
you more conscious of travel
ing by plane,” he said.
Despite the catastrophe on
September 11, the aftermath
seemed to bring about a
renewed sense of unity and
compassion.
“I think it’s sad, and I feel
that everybody should take a
moment to remember those
we lost,” said Aletea Joosten.
“I think people should take
the time out to understand and
appreciate each others’ cul
ture, since we live in a diverse
society,” she added.
Chiniqua Beale had similar
sentiments.
“I think it was devastating
and from this moment on, we
should all learn from this by
getting along and cherishing
our loved ones while they are
yet here,” she said.
One thing we can be cer
tain about is that 9/11 will
never be forgotten. Each indi
vidual has their own view on
how it has affected their lives.
The best thing for America to
do is acknowledge the fear anc
the pain, and use it to put
things about the tragedy into
perspective.
