PAGE TWO THE NEWS ARGUS SEPTEMBER. 1974 Letter to the Editor 8GA is working Dear Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the entire student body back to w'hat I am sure will be an innovative, inspiring, and exciting year. A main concern of our administration is to establish unity and a direct line of communication to all facets of the student doby. It is our hope that the unity resulting from better communicat ions will enable us to move in a positive direction. Though simply said, this in itself is a task that will require the cooperation of every- one. At the present, the executive council is in the process of con structing a viable organization. The structure of the Student Govern ment is chaotic, out-dated, and often a hinderance and self-defeating to the programs of the S.G.A. administrators. So much valuable time is required to function within the bureaucratic channels just to pro duce small efforts and programs that the officers aren’t able to articul ate and exert their full capabilities. Also the planning of a social calendar, homecoming, etc. have be come so burdensome that the entire staff has to direct attention to it. In the future we hope to remove social activities from the concern to the Student Government into a separate entity. Until this time, we will utilize the class representatives and volunteers to the fullest ex tent. Lastly, the office of president, through tradition more than by design, has become the entire S.G.A. All the responsibility, attention, disfavor and/or prestige is directed at one person. Consequently, people fail to recognize the proper executive council members and their responsibilities thus bogging the president down with matters which can be handled elsewhere. It is not my wish to control everything and make all decisions. Nor do I desire to have all power and prestige centered around myself. Fortunately, a very capable staff was selected to work with me and I need everyone’s cooperation to allow them to expose their talents. Realizing the deadlines and inconvenience of printing elsewhere that slow down the News Argus, the S.G.A. will pubhsh news-letters at intervals to keep everyone informed. The programs, events, and policies of S.G.A. will be discussed further in its first issue. I wish you a successful year and look forward to working with you to inform and direct our constituency.
