Rams Romp By
Fayetteville State
Saturday night at Bowman Gray
Stadium the Winston-Salem State
Rams put it all together ripping
the Fayetteville State Broncos 41-
24. The Rams offense did
everything Coach Cleo Wallace
asked of them as they amassed
464 yards total offense. On the
Rams first possession of the ball
after the defense stopped the
Bronco’s on a fake field goal
attempt, Franco Goode, the
Rams starting quarterback
rammed the ball into Big John
Connally’s stomach. The big
fullback who was playing with a
broken nose plunged through a
big hole opened up by an inspired
offensive line and romped 68
yards to the Bronco’s 11 yard line
before being dragged down.
Chico Dunlap, the Rams other
setback, carried to the 4 yard line
on the next play. Connally then
carried the Bronco defensive line
into the end zone on his back for
the score. Jerome McDaniel
added the point-after to give the
Rams a 7-0 lead with less than 4
minutes going in the first period.
The Broncos came back to
score following the kick-off. They
moved to the Rams 5 yard line
where the defense stiffened and
John Highsmith made good on a
21 yard field goal cutting the Ram
lead to 7-3 midway through the
first quarter.
The Rams after being
penalized on the ensuing kick-off
took the ball on their own 12 yard
line. Dunlap and Connally
running behind the best blocking
they had received all year moved
the ball to midfield on four plays
each carrying the ball two times.
On one play the official blew the
whistle after the entire Bronco
defense failed to down Connally.
Coach Cleo Wallace perhaps
feeling that the running game
was not exciting enough for the
partisian crowd who braved 35
degree weather to watch the
Rams do their thing, then
inserted Londell McClary as
quarterback. McClary who had
missed the Rams last three
games with a shoulder injury and
only returned to practice on
Monday immediately unleashed
one of his bombs hitting George
“Fireball” Gordon who was
playing in the place of injured
Flanker Goerge Maclin for a 43
yard gain. Three plays later
Connally again ran over the
Bronco defense for the score. The
kick failed and the Ram’s led 13-3
with 1.15 still left in the first
quarter.
On their next series of downs
the Rams drove 58 yards in seven
plays to increase their lead to 19-
3. The beautifully executed drive
was highlighted by a 15 yard pass
play from McClary to Gordon and
a little razzle-dazzle as Gordon
scampered 19 yards on an end
around to the Fayetteville 9. On
the next play McClary dropped
back to pass, finding his
receivers covered, he retreated
to the 20 then darted to the
sideline and raced into the end
zone. After a penalty the Rams
failed on the two point conversion
try and the score remained 19-3 at
three minutes into the second
period.
Fayetteville’s offense however
was not to be denied. John Young
recovered a blocked Ram punt at
the WSSU 30 yard line. Two plays
later Timothy Heath ran 32 for
the score. Highsmiths conversion
cut the Rams lead to 9 at 19-10
with 8:46 remaining in the first
half.
After the Rams punted on their
next possession from deep in
their own territory, Fayetteville
took over on the Ram 47. Bronco
quarterback Jerome McDowell
hit flanker with a 38 yard strike
for a first down on the Ram 9.
Three plays later on 4th and 1,
Heath plunged in for the score.
Highsmith after faking a kick
passed to James Glasson for the 2
point conversion and the Broncos
were back in the game trailing 19-
18 with a little over 4 minutes left
in the half. Neither team scored
again in the first half and the
Bronco’s seemed to have the
momentum going in to the locker
room only 1 point down after
trailing 19-3 early in the second
quarter.
The Rams however, were
inspired at halftime by Head
Coach Cleo Wallace, and his
staff. They came out of the
dressing room fired up. The
defense stiffened and Charles
Robinson intercepted the first of
three aerials the Rams picked off
in the second half. McClary then
threw to John Gist who rambled
into the end zone for a touchdown
covering 34 yards. McDaniel
PAT gave the Rams a 26-18 lead
at 6:14 of the third period. Less

Rams 26-10 Defeat
The WSSU Rams lost their
third game in a row to a CIAA
divisional leader as Norfolk State
handed the Rams a 26-10 defeat
on October 5. State took an early
3-0 lead over the Spartans when
Chico Dunlap, the Rams speedy
setback, took a handoff on the 33
and raced 55 yards before being
dragged down.
The Rams then failed to move
the ball and Jerome McDaniel,
the Rams place kicker, booted a
35 yard field goal. The Ram lead,
however, was short-lived.
Spartan quarterback Steve
Grapff hit 7 out of 19 passes for 98
yards. He accounted for three
touchdown passes. Grapff moved
Norfolk down the field capping
the drive by passing 18 yards to
Dwight Powell for the first
Spartan score. The conversion
gave the Spartans the lead which
they never relinquished.
Norfolk got its second score
early in the second quarter when
a center snap was fumbled by the
Rams.
Later in the second quarter,
Grapff drove the Spartans 51

than a minute later Robinson
picked off another pass and
McClary wound up again. This
time he found freshman Authur
Mason, a converted quarterback,
and the bomb was good for 37
yards and another Ram score.
McDaniel methodically kicked
the conversion and the score
mounted to 33-18.
Still not satisfied with the score
the Ram defense decided to make
the route complete. After scoring
a safety, making the score 35-18,
Sylvester “Sly” Williams
intercepted yet another pass,
then Chico Dunlap decided to get
in on the fun, he covered the 17
yards between the Rams and
paydirt in 2 plays going 5 yards
for the Rams final tally.
Fayetteville was able to block the
conversion attempt but the
scoreboard told the story 41-18
Rams with 8:37 left to play in the
game. The Rams gave
Fayetteville a score with 1:07
remaining making it 41-24 but the
fans hardly noticed as
they chanted V-l-C-T-O-R-Y from
the chilly stands.

Livingstone Blanks Rams 13-0
The impromptu play by the
WSSU RAMS caused them
another defeat on Saturday,
October 12, in Salisbury to the
Bears of Livingstone. The game
was close throughout the first
half. The breaking play of the
game came in the second period
when the Bear’s quarterback
connected with his wide receiver
on a post pattern.
Our defense again looked
extremely well against the
Livingston offensive unit. They
only gave up 10 first downs and 12
yards on the ground. They also
created four fumbles and held the
Bears to 74 yards in the air.
The units only bad moments
were the two touchdown plays.
One was made by Eley for a 12
yard run and the other was a pass
from Nichole to Branch for 48
yards. This 48 yard pass play was
the only blemish on the RAM’s
secondary.
Offensively, the RAMS were
moving the ball both in the air
and on the ground, but too many
costly mistakes were made.
These mistakes in general caused
us to suffer another defeat.
The RAMS had quite a number of
outstanding plays but we just
could not put them all together.
The final score was 13-0.

Virginia Union Defeats Rams
yards ending the attack with a 9-
yard pass to Robert Powell for
another TD. The score at
halftime was 21-3 in favor of the-
Spartans.
In the third period, the Norfolk
defense added two more points on
the scoreboard with a blocked
Ram punt.
Still in the third period, the
Spartans drove inside the Ram
20, but the Rams held them back
when McDaniel sacked Grapff as
he attempted to pass. The
Spartans settled for a 38-yard
field goal.
With six minutes left in the
game, McDaniel, who played a
tremendous game defensively,
blocked a punt which Ram
linebacker Quincey Crank
recovered on the Norfolk seven
yard line.
After a penalty against the
Spartans, Chico Dunlap plunged
over from the two. A McDaniel
conversion ended the scoring as
Norfolk won, 26-10.

Saturday night September 28,
was a long night for the Ram
fans. The game was a contest
between the Va. Union Panthers
and the WSSU RAMS. We fell
victims to the defending CIAA
Champions.
The Panthers, on the ground,
had a crushing attack. They
massed 36 yards rushing through
Larry Roberts, who was the
CIAA leading ground rusher last
year. The defensive squad for the
Panthers was also impressive.
They put four points on the score
board in less than four miniates
apart. Along with feet, they
picked off two of Franco Goode’s
aerials and recovered two WSSU
fumbles.
The RAMS moved the ball
convincingly on the Panthers but
every time they marched the ball
within scoring territory, the ball
was lost.
The WSSU defensive unit still
looked impressive all night,
stopping the Panthers four
straight times. They also put up a
tremendous goal line stance
against Union which stopped
them on their one yard line. The
RAMS defensively were quite
outstanding. They received good
effort from Curtis Richardson,
Carson Ewings, Quincey Crank
and the rest of the defensive unit.
Offensively, they did not have
many bright spots, but in the
game fans saw a good effort from
Franco Goode, who was
substituting for Londell McClary.

Ram of
The Week
The Ram of the Week
originated during the first official
meeting of the then proposed
radio program, “Back to the
People.” This award has several
purposes. The basic idea behind
the recognition is to create
enthusiasm, concern and a
feeling of unconditional
brotherhood stimulated by one
hundred per cent support from
the student body. As of the week
of October 12, five outstanding
Rams have been recognized for
their athletic endeavors. They
are as follows:
Johnny Rogers, a sophomore
Sociology major from
Williamston, N.C. plays tight
end. Johnny was sidelined by
injury and only played briefly
last season. In the first game of
the 1974 Ram season against
Hampton, Johnny showed the
greatest of poise. Johnny
continuously caught passes
underneath the Hampton
secondary for continuous Ram
first downs.
Charlie Houston is a right
cornerback for the Rams. He is a
Senior Physical Education major
from Charlotte, N.C. Charlie has
been starting for the past three
seasons. During this time, he has
become a team leader. Charlie
was chosen “Ram of the Week”
for his outstanding defensive
performance against North
Carolina Central University. He
intercepted an Eagle pass in the
end zone and along with the
remaining defensive backfield,
stopped an Eagle passing attack
from being established.
Chico Dunlap is a Senior
running back from Charlotte,
N.C. Chico is the leading ground
gainer for the Rams. In the
Norfolk State game alone, Chico
rushed 18 times for 125 yards. On
the team Chico is known as “the
coach” because of his- fine
attitude on and off of the field.
Frazier Lowe^, also a Senior,
is from Gastonia, N.C. He is a
punter as well as a right
cornerback. Frazier was
nominated for Ram of the Week
following a magnificent
performance against Virginia
Union. Frazier is a Business
Administration major. He has
played extremely well all season,
but his game reached a high
against Virginia Union.
Sylvester Williams is a Senior
linebacker from Smithville, N.C.
Sly has been injured for most of
the beginning part of the season,
sidelined with knee problems.
Yet, Sly remains one of the
strongest individuals on the
team. He was duly recognized
after the game against the
Livingstone Bears. He is
majoring in history.
