Page 8 - The News Argus - February, 1977 Dick Gregory Captivates Crowd At WSSU Continued from page 1 which showed that weather modification would soon begin to affect the nations weather patterns, thus having a direct affect on crops, and food prices. Gregory says, “A lot of people thought I was crazy last summer when I predicted that it would snow in Miami, and that fresh fruits and vegetables would triple in price!” Gregory is urging the government under the direction of President Carter to begin immediate investigation into present weather modifica tion programs to discover whether there is a deliberate attempt to ruin crops in order to boost prices. The third issue facing the new administration says Gregory, is the fact that “millions of Americans are being used as human guinea pigs for government autho rized experiments. ’ ’ Gregory says that a great number of people have unknowingly been injected with a cancer virus, and that the govern ment should under no circumstances have the right to conduct such experi ments. hi a February 1, 1977 telegram to President Jimmy Carter, Gregory points to an article in the February 1977 issue of Atlantic Monthly magazine entitled “Science that Frightens Scientists”. This article tells of a widely used virus known as simian virus 40, or SV 40 as it is commonly termed. This substance is known to promote cancerous cell growth when injected into animals, though no reports have been released as to its affect on humans. Gregory says that the government should call an immediate hault to all experiments of this kind involving human beings whose lives are at stake because of tests they aren’t even aware of. Gregory made a plea to the audience to wake up to the foul procedures that are going on in our government. “The external forces must be dealt with because they are the sources of the internal problems.” Gregorjj also stated that the system is a powerful force and there is no way to safety. People must become self-sufficient because the nation will face a food crisis very soon. Consequently Gregory is edso a vegetarian. He told the audience that there are so many chemicals being placed in foods, until one has to be very careful about buying. Gregory also sug gested fasting to the crowd. He stated that the time will soon come when one will have to do this, so we should start practicing now. In an effort to challenge the students at W.S.S.U. Gregory reminded them of the power they have and the changes that can be made if they are willing to make the sacrifice. Gregory advocated the need for universal love and knowledge of oneself in order to survive the dilemmas of today. “The problems have gotten out of hand. They are no longer restricted to a local level. They are our pro blems, and we must deal with them or they will destroy us.” Gregory has illustrated his commitment to the cause of human liberation often through the form of fasting. In 1975 he completed his 800-mile run from Chicago to Washington, D.C. to call attention to the problem of hunger in the world, and his most recent run was completed in the summer of 1976. Gregory ran from Los Angeles to New York City. Gregory can be described without any hesitation as a multi-talented individual who combines all of his roles (recording artist, author, lecturer, actor, human rights activist, social satirist, critic, philosopher, and political analyst) to serve the cause of human liberation. Tuesday evening with Dick Gregory will not be forgotten, nor will his message be taken lightly. His lecture contained viable information that cannot be found in any textbook anywhere. Some of the smartest black executives work for us. The Navy, though few black college men realize it, can be one of the fastest places for a smart young man to get ahead. Responsibility comes quickly at sea, and it’s real responsibility. An officer less than a year out of college may be in charge of thirty men; after just two years he may run a division of fifty or more. In four years, a Navy officer can have more managerial expe rience than most civilians have midway through their careers. The Navy has officer programs in Aviation and Nuclear Propulsion, in Supply, Law, Medicine, and many others. Talk it over with your Navy recruiter or call 800-841-8000 toll free. Early responsibility. Black or white, it’s what being a Navy officer is all about. NAVY OFFICER. rr'S NOT JUST A JOB, irs an adventure.
