Founder’s Day, October 17, will be a
special day for Clarence “Bighouse”
Gaines. No, it's not his birthday or an
niversary. It’s the day for the dedica
tion of the new C.E. Gaines Complex.
The complex serves as a structure of
gratitude for Clarence Gaines, the
man, the coach...THE LEGEND.
What about Clarence Gaines. Where
does he come from? What is he like
and what are his accomplishments?
He was born Clarence Edward, May
21, 1923 in Paducah, Kentucky. He was
the only child of Lester and Olivia
Gaines. He was raised during the Great
Depression.
Gaines’ life has been centered
around love. “In fact I rejected some
of my love,” said Gaines, “I was
almost like a play toy.”
It is often heard of a baby being
born with a “silver spoon.” But with a
basketball? No, not really. However, it
would seem almost synonymous to the
tremendous coaching success of
Clarence Gaines. “I took after my
mother. She was very active in
athletics,” admits Gaines, “she always
told me she was on a high school
basketball team that never lost.”
As a student at Morgan State
University, Gaines majored in
chemistry and minored in math and
physical education. He was also an ac
tive member of the football and

psychology. Her short range goal is to
work with the mentally handicapped.
Lauretta also wants to obtain a masters
in business and work with a major film
corporation.
“To be a good campus queen you
must have a good correlation with the
student body, make a great deal of
sacrifices, handle a lot of responsibili
ty, try not to let things upset you and
conduct yourself well in all
situations,” says Lauretta.
She is a member of the sociology
and psychology clubs. Business In
dustry Cluster, Student Government
Association and Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority. Among her favorite foods
are seafood and salads. Some of her
hobbies are writing, reading, poetry,
drama and bowling. She also enjoys
watching basketball and football
games.
Miss WSSU’s advice to the student
body is “Great things are achieved
through effort; therefore, at all times,
put forth your very best effort to reach
your goals, always being considerate of
others.”
