The News Argus, November, 1981, Page 5 Hayes - More Than Just A Football Coach By C. “Sport” Page On the eve of ending another season, head coach Bill Hayes finishes his sixth year as coach of the Rams football squad. Hayes will also be completing his fifth consecutive winning season as Ram coach. In 1977, WSSU went 10-0 and cap tured the first CIAA Title and Cham pionship under Hayes^ leadership. Hayes, a 16 year veteran at the art of coaching, has spread his roots into coaching other sports. “Through my years of coaching, I have also coached basketball, track, and tennis,” said Hayes. Hayes, a graduate of North Carolina Central, played football for the Eagles. Tyrone Grandberry and Danny Womack, 6’3” Guard/Forwards, are outstanding athletes who could play important roles in the coming season. ‘‘The difference in last years team and the present team is that the players seem to enjoy playing as a team,” stated Sam Cary, sports in formation director. “The Rams have been hampered by a lack of size the past few years, but the problem has been resolved”, stated Cary. The Rams recruited four players 6’6” or more to resolve the big man shortage. The remaining recruits are quality athletes who promise to give the fans action-packed basketball. The Rams experienced one of the most productive recruiting years that they have had in quite some time. Ten of the fifteen recruits were All-City in their respective home towns. The future of the Rams’ success will depend on the rate in which they develop as the season progresses. The Rams open the season on December 1, at A&T State University in the Corbett Gymnasium on the Aggie campus. The Ram-Aggie clash should be an early test for the Rams. “Everyone is optimistic”, said Head Coach “Bighouse” Gaines. I like to play and compete in sports; working and helping a player develop are qualities in which 1 thrive on in coaching,” said Hayes. His main objective in coaching is, “To win, never to lose and to keep my men up and ready to play at all times. Team Work.” Hayes, in looking for a top recruit, feels that these are the qualities that make him a good athlete. “Speed, guts, and the attitude and determination as a player to want to work hard at what he is doing.” Behind a good football team is a hard working staff, that along with the head coach, produces a good football team. The staff which has worked with Hayes to give him his fifth consecutive winning season out of his six years as a Ram coach are offensive coordinator Alfred Harvey; defensive coordinator Charles Griffen, offensive running back coach William Edward Peay; wide receiver coach Linwood Gerald; defensive line coach Steve Komon- dorea, and defensive secondary coach Pete Richardson. Hayes and his staff have received the reputation and respect throughout the conference as the “hardest working” coaches in the CIAA.
