Sports Rams Roll Over CIAA Standings N.C. Central 21-13 By Sam Davis WSSU put on a brilliant display of power football defeating last year’s CIAA Southern Division champs N.C. Central 21-13 at Bowman Gray Stadium. The Rams came out fired-up and seeking revenge for a 37-17 thrashing they took fron the Eagles on regional television last year. The win put the Rams in first place in the CIAA south. Coach Bill Hayes was ecstatic over the Rams win against his alma mater. “We’re finally getting some breaks for a change,” Hayes says. “Our new offense has helped us some, but maturity is the key factor in our 3-0 start.” Offensive linemen Danny Moore, Aluin Powell and Jonathon Nimmons led the way for the Rams offensively. The trio dominated the line of scrimmage and that was the key for the Rams. Powell was awarded player-of-the game honors for his work in the trenches. Early on, the Rams chance did not look very good, as Gerald Fraylon led the Eagles on a quick scoring drive to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. Fraylon, the Eagles strong-armed and fleet flooted quarter back, guided his team 80 yards for a score in only 9 plays. Robert Clark, a freshman wide receiver, took in a 44 yard bomb from Fraylon to account for the Eagles early lead. But the Rams didn’t fold. With the help of a 15-yard penalty on the ensuing kick- off, the Rams took only 8 plays to reach pay-dirt. Starting from the NCCU 49-yard line, the Rams negotiated the real estate in eight straight runnning plays, straight into the heart of the Eagles defense. Freshman Leonardo Horne got the Rams score on a five yard touchdown, off an inside reverse to knot the game at 7-7. The Rams went on top 14-7 as a result of a 13 yard scoring pass from Karlton Wat son to tight end Bobby Clark. Clark grabb ed the throw one yard deep in the end zone, fighting off several Eagles defenders. The score at halftime was 14-7. N.C. Central came out strong in the se cond half, but the pressure of the Rams on Fraylon was too much. Fraylon was hur ried on most of his passes as Eddie Sauls and Darrell Hairston put constant pressure on the Eagles signal-caller. Sauls had three sacks of Fraylon, while Hairston got to Fraylon 4 times.
