In case some of you are not aware of it,
Winston-Salem State University has a
radio station, WSNC-FM Stereo. WSNC
has been in operation a little over three
months now.
The radio station is operable 6-days a
week, from 6-12 pm. The dial is 90,5 and the
disc jockeys are students at WSSU. WSNC
is 99% student operated and Clarence
Thomas, the General Manager puts in
about 1%, because it is a student project.
The main musical format of WSNC is
progressive jazz. There is a “love hour”
with Percy Johnson, “easy listening” with
Jennifer Baggett, and “today’s hits” with
Darrell Jeffries. Other disc jockeys are
Arthur Johnson, Maurice Rouse, William
Pass, Marian Anderson, and Alvin
Chamblee.
Interviews are held each semester as
positions become available. Applying for a
disc jockey position is the same as apply
ing for a regular job. First, an application
is hlled out and appointments are made for
interviews. After being called in for the in
terview, an audition is scheduled. Once the
audition has been completed, the person
nel are selected.
A screening board, consisting of Dr.
Eady, Mr. Thomas, and Dr. Dervin,
evaluates the overall voice quality. The
applicant must give an oral report of his
own, then “ad-lib” the presentation of the
screening board. Then finally, a technical
on-the-air test is given. All of the screening
for radio staff personnel is done at the
beginning of each semester. If interested,
please contact Mr. Clarence Thomas, 3rd.

The staff of WSNC have initiated several
promotional ideas for the radio station.
One project was the sale of WSNC T-shirts
to the staff and students. Another project
(that’s in the making now) is the First An
nual WSNC Masquerade Ball. Yes, that’s
right, a masquerade ball.
The gala event will be held on Oct. 21st at
the National Guard Armory and will in
clude prizes awarded for costumes of the
“Best Organization, Best All-Around, Besi
Class” and many other catagories.
Throughout the night, everyone will be
entertained by Cinnomon Reggae, another
local band, as well as, live DJ’s. The
judges for these events will be Dr. Eady,
Dr. Holman, and Alice Johnson of WSSU.
Tickets can be purchased from Darrell
Jeffries, Clarence Thomas or any radio
staff personnel. The prices are
$1.50/singles, $2.00/couples in advance. At
the door, $2.00/singles, $2.50/couples.
Let’s support our campus radio station,
after all, they are here for you. Look for
more of this gala affair in our next issue!
