Page 8' Portland Oregon School District NEEDS YOU!! On November 23, in WSSU’s Placement Office, Aletha Davis, Director of Personnel for PorUand Public Schools, was here recruiting WSSU teaching majors. Mrs. Chavis was interested in talking to students whose goals are to teach elemen tary, middle and high school students. Preferred subjects for high school teachmg are math, special education and advanced sciences. “Portland is a progressive, forward- looking school district anxious to encourage diversity of the teaching staff (ethnic, regional and cultural). Anyone who can ac cept a challenge and has a commitment to educational excellence is encouraged to ap ply!”, said Chavis. Portland has a population of 375.000. There are 80 elementary schools, 17 mid dle schools and 10 high schools. There are also eight Early Childhood Education pro grams and several alternative education programs. Obviously, teachers have a wide variety of areas to chose from depending on which level in school they wish to to teach. The starting salary for students with a B.A. is $18,530. If you have acquired your M.A. the salary would start at $20,846. The district has an excellent employee benefit package that values almost 40% of your salary! Teachers can earn extra pay by coaching, helping advisory clubs and other extra-curricular activities. Requirements to teach in Oregon include the following: First, obUining an Oregon certificate, which students qualify for if they’ve completed an educational program in an accredited school such as WSSU; and secondly, students must pass the CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test) which can only be taken in Oregon or California for $35.00. Suite 222 Norman, Oklahoma 73069 Dr. Fred Eady Eady Chosen as Teacher of the Month by Maureen Chavis Recently, a student poll was taken asking students who their favorite teacher is. Dr Fred Eady was chosen as the recipient ol this honor. “I was amazed about being voted most popular. The students are delightful and it’s because of them why I’m here,” said Eady. Dr. Eady was bom in Robertsville, S.C. He attended Voorhees Episcopal School, which is now a university. He went on to fur ther his education at Howard University ac quiring a BA in Theatre; New York Univer sity where he received his MA in Theatre; and at Michigan State, his Ph.D. in—Theatre! Eady has beent teaching Speech and Drama at WSSU since 1975. In addition to teaching, he is the director of all plays per formed at WSSU. Students saw his recently directed “...Colored Girls...”, Fri day, December 4 and Saturday, December 5 at 8:00 p.m. in K. R. Williams Auditorium. While teaching at this first job at Bennett College in Greensboro, Eady met his wife Mary. Their son Alan, Jr. attends WSSU and is a senior majoring in English. “I find traveling exciting,” said Eady. He also likes to visit museums, libraries and to “ooh and ahh” at old houses. While talking with Dr. Eady he recalled his adventures during his earlier school breaks. He would take a train or bus to a place he d never been to, just because of the adventure and excitement of being in a different city!
