Rams Thrash
Bulldogs 28-3
By Joyce McMillan
SPORTS EDITOR
In iheir season opener the Winston-
Salem State Rams traveled to Knoxville,
Tennessee to meet the Bulldogs of
Knoxville College. The Rams thrashed
the Bulldogs 28-3.
In the first quarter the Bulldogs made
WSSU stand up and take note when they
returned a kickoff back to the Ram's two
yardline. The Bulldogs were not able to
capitalize on that run and had to settle for
a field goal. Thereafter, it was all Rams.
Senior quarterback, Kenny Jones,
completed nine of 20 pass attempts
including a 37-yard bomb to Yancey
Thigpen. After that score the Rams were
up 14-3.
They prevented the Bulldogs from
scoring again regardless of their impres
sive drives. Each time when it appeared
Knoxville was going in for a score the
Rams’ defense would hold them.
Knoxville was not able to stop the
Rams. The Rams had several dominating
drives that put them in Bulldog territory on
numerous occasions. They capitalized on
enough of those drives for the victory.
That's one down and the rest of the
season to go!!!
Rams Rout

SPORTS EDITOR
The Winston-Salem State Rams took
the Aggies of A&T State University back
to school again this season. Like last sea
son the Aggies flunked. Test result?
Rams 48; Aggies 19.
WSSU's kicker, Kanstantino Beligri-
nis, put the Rams on the board first with a
seven yard field goal, then again with a
27-yard field goal making the score 6-0
Rams.
After a touchdown by the Aggies,
WSSU's quarterback, Kenny Jones, went
through an opening for seven points.
Rudell Wilson recovered a fumble on the
Aggie’s 44 for the Rams. Four plays and
67 yards later, Jones went in for another
touchdown. The next Ram touchdown
came compliments of Robert Howard in
the third quarter, putting WSSU ahead 32-
12.
The offense as well as the defense
was in total control throughout the game.
Several defensive players made key
blocks, caused and recovered fumbles and
sacked A&T’s quarterback.
With only five minutes remaining in
the game the Rams got what was to be
their last touchdown of the evening, this
time from Rodney Jackson.
Intramural
Sports Are
Alive And Well
At WSSU

Many of the students on WSSU's
campus complain because there is nothing
to do. An interest in intramural sports
may be the thing WSSU students need.
This year the intramural sports program
plans to offer students a variety of "things
to do".
Thomas Leach, The Hauser Student
Union director, is trying to make intramu
ral sports more interesting by offering stu
dents such things as flag football,
freestyle swimming, pillo polio, a basket
ball three-point shooting contest, horse
shoes, and a lot more.
According to Leach, "Students usual
ly don’t sign up for the sports we offer.
That's why we don't have them." Leach
says he would like to go so far as to have
a Black College Intramural Day. This
would be a big event that would resemble
a field day where food and drinks will be
sold while Black colleges participate
against one another in intramural sports.
"The track event which is scheduled
to take place in April would also run the
same way. It's just a matter of doing it.
We just need the student interest,"
explained Leach.
If any student is interested in the aer
obic class or any intramural sport, he or
she should contact Leach in room 107 of
the Hauser Student Union or call 750-
3380.
Rams Bang
Bears
The Winston-Salem State University
Rams were on the road to add yet another
victory to their unblemished record. The
unsuspecting Livingston Bears were the
involuntary victims. They were beaten
28-15.
Although Coach Pete Richardson was
not pleased with the Ram's performance
on the field, they were still able to come
off with a win. They had several penal
ties, fumbles and chances for six intercep
tions which were either dropped or just
simply missed handled.
With the help of two freshman block
ers, Jerry Fitzgerald and Ray Felton,
Yancey Thigpen carried a 41-yard throw
from quarterback Kenny Jones in for a
Ram touchdown.
WSSU's Jones, led the Rams to two
Rams Crush Aggies
touchdowns, one on a 55-yard drive,
topped off by a 27-yard pass to Ron Joyn
er and the other with Willie Latta's 44-
yard, three tackle break-touchdown.

The Rams will meet the Fayetteville
State Broncos in what is sure to be a VIC
TORY!! The Rams are undefeated at 4-0
overall; 2-0 in the conference.
Mouzon Breaks State Records
By Marcus Myers
SPORTS WRITER
This summer, an outstanding feat of
strength was displayed by a Winston-
Salem State wrestler. In July, at Eastern
Guilford High in Greensboro, NC, Willie
Mouzon won an annual power lifting con
test.
During the contest he broke two state
power lifting records for his weight class.
He set state records for the deadlift (625
lbs) and his combined totals (1550 lbs)
were also a state record.
In a power lifting contest, there are
three events: the squat, the bench press,
and the deadlift. At these events, the par
ticipant has three and only three attempts
at each event. Unlike most of his com
petitors in the competition, Mouzon
entered the 165 lbs weight class as the
youngest and the least experienced
competitor. Mouzon had roughly two or
three months training while his competi
tors had about five or six years or power
lifting under their belts.
Coach John Patterson of the Rams'
football team noticed Mouzon's strength
and technique during his weight training
class. "Pound for pound, Mouzon is one
of the strongest kids I've seen in a while"
Patterson said. Patterson interested
Mouzon in the contest and later entered
him. He won the contest by squatting 575
lbs, bench pressing 350 lbs, and dead lift
ing 625 lbs.
Mouzon plans to enter the contest
again next summer. He also plans to enter
the National Powerlifting contest which
was held in Pennsylvania this past sum
mer. Mouzon failed to enter the contest
then because he could not find a sponsor
in time. Mouzon, who was an All-Ameri-
can wrestler his freshman year, said the
training prepared him well for the upcom
ing wresding season.
