February 1991 — The News Argus Page 15 SPORTS Rose Deserves Induction After All John A. Little Staff Writer On Monday, February 4, 1991, a Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Committee came to a unanimous decision that anyone who is banned from baseball is ineligible for induction into the Hall. This ruling essentially eliminates any hope for a 1992 election and induction into the Hall for Pete Rose, baseball's all-time hit leader. To restate the facts for those not familiar with with the situation, Pete Rose was banned from baseball for life in 1989 by the late former baseball commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti for betting on Major League baseball games, specifically those involving the team he then managed, the Cincinnati Reds. Rose, to this day, denies the allegations, despite the evidence. Since then, he has been convicted on Federal Tax Evasion charges and is currently serving the final three months of an eight month prison term in a halfway house in Ohio. Although these troubles definitely College Media Coverage: Is It Fair John A. Little Staff Writer Congratulations are in order for UNC- Chapel Hill's Dean Smith on recently attaining his career 700'th victory, which received all the local media attention and excitement in Chapel Hill that we felt here in Winston Salem last year for Coach Gaines' 800th win. But nationally, who got more recognition? Of course, it was Coach Smith. On all the national sports shows and highlight shows on the night of Coach Smith's victory, that was the lead story and a main focus of the shows. But where was that for Coach Gaines, and when the "All-Time Great College Basketball Coaches" Coach Gaines was no where to be seen? The situation is the same in college football. When the great coaches are named you hear Lou Holtz, Joe Patemo, Bo LOSE 20 POUNDS IN TWO WEEKS! Because that's what the Ski Team Diet will do. © 1990 taint Pete Rose, they do not,in my opinion, take away from Pete Rose, the player. The Hall of Fame has members who are less than model citizens like Ty Cobb, an admitted racist who was also accused of betting on baseball, and soon-to-be inducted Ferguson Jenkins, who was arrested and convicted on cocaine charges in the early 1980's in Canada. I'm not advocating gambling, nor am I condoning Rose's actions. But for nearly 30 years when fans thought of a hard nosed, fiery competitor, Pete Rose was the first name that came to mind. For years. Rose was the epitome of the consummate ballplayer. It would be a shame for the all-time hit leader not to be inducted in the Hall of Fame. Having been to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, many times,l can tell you it is impressive. I was always under the impression that the honor bestowed on these great players was for their on-he-field performance, not their extracurricular activities. Wouldn't it be hypocritical for it to be called "The Baseball Hall of Fame" and Pete Rose not be in it? Schembechler, but you will often only hear Grambling head coach Eddie Robinson as an afterthought. The wirmingest coach in college football history, the one with the most wins ever is often only an afterthought. Why is this? Some will say that these coaches won most of their games against opponents that didn't have the "top caliber athletes." I don't think that this is relevant or true. While both Coach Gaines and Coach Robinson were winning a good percentage of their games. Black schools couldn't play the large White schools with the supposed top talent. This is no reason to exclude them from the lists of the top coaches in their respective sports. So, for every mention of John Wooden or Adolf Rupp, there should be a mention of Coach Gaines: for every reference to Knute Rockne, let's also refer to Eddie Robinson. Let's start giving our great Black college coaches their due recognition and credit for their accomplishments. 1991 Steeplechase Takes New Format With attendance estimated to reach 50,000 and 60,000 people, the 24th annual running of the Steeplechase at Tanglewood will feature not only horse racing at its finest, but an expanded format for the entire family.
