Page 6 The News Argus — March 1992 GREEKS— AKAs Have Service on Their l\/linds By Danielle Gray Greek Section Editor In keeping with their purpose, "Service to All Mankind,” Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has participated in several activities and service pro jects throughout the 1991-1992 aca demic school year. Some of the activities included their very own “Woman-to-Woman" Seminar, the Greek Awareness Seminar, and the Organizational Awareness Seminar The purpose of the “Woman-to- Woman" Seminar was to advise and assist incoming freshman ladies with their new college experiences. They discussed such topics as proper study habits, career goals, extra-curricular activities, and special services (i.e.. Career Services) all of which are of fered here on the campus of Winston- Salem State University. This semester Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will continue to work with SCAN, a program for par ents who are on the verge of abusing their children, and want to seek coun seling first. Sorors acted as role mod els for the children during their par ents conuseling sessions. Additionally, Gamma Lambda will tutor students at Union Cross Elementary School. They will act as mentors by as sisting the children with homework, discussing their future plans, and communicating with them. As you can very well tell, the ladies of Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. stand strong and proud on their motto, “Service to All Mankind.” Zetas Are Active in the Community By Michaell Parker Co-Editor Community service, academic excellence, finer womanhood, and sisterly love are the elements on which Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded. The Omega Chapter, here on campus, are busily devoting time, ef fort, and talent to various organiza tions and services. The sorority is planning a “Youth Fest” for local youth. This will be an educational program featuring some topics that affect our black youth. The day will end with a “Super-Jam” pany. During March 26-29, the Zetas will attend the sorority's Eastern Regionals in Roanoke, Va. Jayme W. Bridges and other campus queens who are Zetas will be featured at the Undergraduate Luncheon. In late March, the Zetas will sponsor an information booth at Hanes Mall with the March of Dimes. They are also planning a Spring Fling for the residents of one of the local rest homes. The Zetas recently had a Can Food Drive to support the Samaritan Soup Kitchen on Patterson Avenue. They received outstanding support from the students on campus. Some students even donated money towards the effort. Several members have devoted their time to special community pro grams. Phyllis Joseph, chairperson of the Community and Action Committee, headed the project to do nate clothes to the Child Develop ment Division of Family Services (HEAD START). Ms. Joseph also spent time with women at the Battered Women’s Shelter Chrissy Thomas has directed spe cial educational and entertainment programs for minority children at the Best Choice Center The Zetas are extremely proud of the five new members initiated into their sisterhood during fall semester They are Terri Mitchell, Eugenia Humphrey, Melissa Link, LaKeisha Galloway, and Shelby Harris. Angela Childs is basileus of the Omega Chapter Rho Chapter Worlcs with Area Youth By LaVolce Faison Co-Editor Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., the youngest member of the Greek family and the Pan Hellenic Council, has been on the move for many years. The sorority has a proud history of ser vice provided to the black community. The women of Sigma Gamma Rho are devoted to motivating youth to greater achievement and exploring new horizons. They are energetic women who continue to seek the best out of the worst. Sigma women are branching into the 21st century through a youth group called Rhoers. This is a group of young ladies who are juniors and se niors in high school. The sorority hopes to instill the importance of aca demic achievement and leadership de velopment to these young women. Through the years Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc has achieved several national and local accomplishments. They have also participated in national undergraduate tutoring programs. Project SIGMA/Drugs, Alcohol and Abuse Awareness, March of Dimes, NAACP. Some outstanding women who represent the characteristics of finer womanhood are Christine Houston, play and television script writer for 227; Anna Marie Horsford, actress in television series Amen\ Cynthia Homer, Editor-In-Chief of Right On magazine; Mary Ann Alda, actress on CBS's Royal Family; and Hattie McDaniel, who was the first black to receive a Academy Award. She played the role of "Mammy" in Gone with the Wind. From the beginning of Sigma Gamma Rho until the present. Sigma women are still on the move possess ing the characteristics of finer woman hood. Here at WSSU, Veronica R. Boone serves as the president of the Pan Hellenic Council and LaVoice A. Faison, is president of Rho Chapter. Is Beta lota 2 Legit 2 Quit? By Danielle Gray Greek Writer “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All” is the motto of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The brothers of Beta Iota Chapter began the academic year by sponsoring their annual “Organizational Awareness" Seminar This program provided new and con tinuing students the opportunity to become more informed about various student organizations. The end of the Fall ‘91 semester found Beta Iota in search of a few good men. After careful analysis and close scrutiny, two courageous, intel ligent, conscientious, and ambitious young men stepped boldly into the tradition of excellence which is known to all as ALPHA PHI ALPHA! Fall ‘91, alias "Two Legit," consisted of Corey McPherson and Ron Vample. These two men both possess cumulative GPAs better than 3.0/4.0 scale and are members of "Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges." The other members of the chapter in clude Alvin L. Cates, president; John Little, vice-president; Eric G. Leak, treasurer; Giovanni A. Bass, secre tary; Reginald M. Jones, chair mem bership intake; Derrell Beatty, chap lain; and Jay C. Hutchins, III. Deltas Strive for Academic Excellence by Kla Huff Guest Writer The ladies of Gamma Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. are “on the move” for the 1991-1992 academic school year. Like other Greeks, they participated in the "Organ-iza- tional Awareness** program, sponsored and participated in the Greek Forum. During the month of February, they joined their sorors at Wake Forest Univers ity by participating in the Crimson and Cream Ball on Valentine’s weekend. "Intelligence Is the Torch of Wisdom" Is the motto of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Keisha F. Brown, the chapter’s corresponding secre tary, lives up to this motto. Ms. Brown, a biology major, is a prime example of a student who has acheived aca demic excellence at WSSU. She is an honor student, a Thurgood Marshall Scholar, and a member of "Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universi ties." She is also actively in volved in the Junior Class, Student Alumni Society, and Biology Qub. Her future plans include becoming a dentist.
