The News Argus - Page 4 CAMPUS HAPPENINGS Mass Communications Major Works on Film BY JAMITA GRIFFIN Editor Winslon-Salem recently got another taste of Hollywood when a movie production crew came to Old Salem for approximately three weeks to shoot a historical movie. Liberty Productions of Trilogy Entertainment based in Los Angeles, choose Old Salem because it provided the look that they needed. The movie, Taking Liberty, a James Bond type adventure story, is set in Colonial America during the year 1778. It will star Sophie Ward as Liberty; David Styers (Col. Winchester from MASH), as Benjamin Franklin; and Jason Carter. Old Salem was chosen because it had the clothing, and the type of buildings. The buildings were closed to tourist and the streets closed to traffic during the shooting of the movie. “We were willing to cooperate with the company by closing all of the buildings to tourist and closing the roads to all traffic,” said Alex Cousin, the assistant director of Public Relations and Marketing at Old Salem. “We were happy to be chosen over bigger sights, such as Colonial Williamsburg." During these three weeks, a senior Mass Communications major turned seeking a part as an extra in the movie into an educational learning opportunity. Tracie DeLoatch worked with Liberty Productions for the entire three weeks as the Production Assistant in Extra Casting. Her job was to call everyone that volunteered for extra casting to make sure they knew when they were to repx)rt to the set. “I had to make sure everyone was dressed and in place on time,” she said. Although DeLoatch is following the Public Relations sequence in her major, she hopes that the experience will help her in future career endeavors. “I loved it, someone told me that once you start working with a film crew, its in your blood, and I believe it because I can talk about it (the experience) for days.” DeLoatch says she learned a lot about the film indusU7 during her three weeks as a production assistant. “I learned that they don’t shoot a movie in sequence,” she said. “I also learned that it can take up to five hours to shoot one scene and that the weather has a lot to do with the filming.” If CBS buys the movie as a series, it is possible that Liberty Productions will return to Winston-Salem. This movie is scheduled to air in 1994.
