Black Pride
Exactly what is Blacic Pride?
Can we always see it or hear it?
Our children, when they shoot and
kill their own race is that
their impression ofBlack Pride
When our Black men bruise our
Black sistas physically and mentally
is thatBlack Pride?
When our Black mayors close down
schools around the black community,
leaving children and young adults
with nothing to do, is that
Black Pride?
When Blacks are granted self-respect
knowledge of their African past,
knowing the rights to any and
everything acceptance of appearance,
having the ability to self-teach as
Poetry Corner
well as preach sealing the bond of
black love between family, friends
and companions. Then we can say
That’s Black Pride.
Black Sheep
I have always loved my dark skin,
but I wonder if 1 were light as a pearly white rabbit,
would 1 love myself any greater or lesser,
would I get that handsome brotha with the nice car and money,
would I be the center of everyone’s attention?
Sometimes its like a million white dots
on a Black page and only one Black image appears
That’s how 1 feel sometimes,
and then I think.
What the hell, in the middle of this herd.
I’m proud to be the Hlack Sheep.”

Marching Rams
March To The Beats
of Different Sounds
BY ENRICO F. LEAK
Staff Writer
It’s time again! Yes, it’s time for the
1995 season for the Winston-Salem State
University Marching Rams. This year
numerous new faces have been added to
the band.
The band, under the direction of
Emory Jones, a WSSU alumnus, has
accomplished much since he became the
director.
“I am really pleased with the
progress of the band. We’re not big, but
we have a better sound,” he said. “I’m
real pleased with the percussion and
brass sections.”
Kevin Handy has joined the
University Marching Rams’ staff this
season. Handy known as “Caesar,” is
Jones’ assistant. He attended Southern
University and received his
undergraduate degree from North
Carolina A & T State University (yes, he
is an Aggie).
“We are very satisfied with Mr.
Handy’s abilities to write and arrange
music along with his knowledge of
music,” said Jones.
Twanjua White, who serves as the
advisor for the dancers and Regina
Singletary, who serves as advisor for the
flags and banner girls will continue to
work with the band.
This season, the Marching Rams
plan to participate in more parades and
become more involved in community
functions. Last month they participated
in a parade in East Spencer, NC, at a
class reunion for Dunbar High School.
So, whenever you are on campus
(especially this weekend) and you hear
melodic sounds from the horns and
thunderous rhythms from the drums, just
remember its time once again for the
Winston-Salem State University
Marching Rams to entertain and amaze
Ram fans over and over again.
