New faces in the classroom Canadian native appointed to Department of English The new English professor is a Canadian native who holds the Ph.D. and two other degrees from the University of Toronto. Dr. Marilyn Channell-Purdy comes to Chowan after serving two years as lec turer in English at the University of Alberta, Canada. She also served as an instructor at Humber College, Toronto, during the fall semester of 1986 and was granted four teaching assistantships while pursuing her graduate studies. Her Ph.D. work was on “The Structures of the ‘Circe’ episode in James Joyce’s Ulysses. " Her M.A. was on “The theatrical motifs in Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Villette, and George Eliot’s Daniel Deronda.” She received her B.A. with honors and was the recipient of the Ontario Graduate Scholarships from 1982-85. Channell-Purdy’s teaching interests include 19th and 20th century fiction and British and North American literature, DR. MARILYN CHANNEL-PURDY Joins English Faculty grammar and composition, and in troductory and general humanities courses. MRS. CAROLE NICHOLSON Music; Formerly Part-Time Nicholson Professor of Music Carole Fuller Nicholson has assumed full-time teaching duties in the Department of Fine Arts after serving as a part-time instructor in music for the past 18 years. She is serving as professor of keyboard, teaching piano and organ. She received her B.A. from Wake Forest University, her undergraduate study with Christopher Giles. Her M.Mus. is from Millikin University Conservatory of Music, Decatur, 111. Her graduate study was with Elizabeth Travis. She also participated in a master’s class in duet performance at the University of Wisconsin. Mrs. Nicholson’s additional professional experience includes teaching fellow at Millikin University for two years and piano instructor, School of Music at the University of Louisville, three years. She is a former organist-choir director at the First Presbyterian Church, Ahoskie. Carole Nicholson holds the certificate of professional advancement in the North Carolina Music Teachers Association. She was recertified on national and state levels in Greensboro in October, 1988. A member of the American Guild of Organists, she has given faculty recitals at Chowan, Atlantic Christian College and North Carolina Wesleyan College. She is listed in Who's Who in American Women. She has served as adjudicator for the American College of Musicians in the Midwest and South and judge for various piano events in North Carolina. White teaching Photography Melvin M. White, who has served on the faculty and staff of three North Carolina community colleges including Raonoke-Chowan, is the new professor of photography within the Department of Graphic Communications. White, who was raised in Old Fort, received the B.A. in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and the Associate of Applied Science in commercial graphics from McDowell Technical College. For the past three and one-half years. White served in a number of faculty and staff positions at Roanoke-Chowan Community College. For nearly two years he taught photography through con tinuing education and served as the graphic designer/print shop supervisor. Beginning in 1987, he taught psychology and sociology and classes in personal growth and development. He was also the tutor coordinator, maintaining and supervising a staff of student tutors to work with the student body. White has also served at Isothermal Community College as a commercial graphics instructor and print shop supervisor and at McDowell Technical College as a photography instructor. Among his private photography projects, White is making scenic photographs of the Outer Banks in cluding the lighthouses. His long-term objective is. to compile a series of photos that can be developed into a book on the Outer Banks. MRS. JENNY T. EAKIN In Mathematics Department Experienced Mathematics Professor Chowan’s new mathematics professor is Jenny T. Eakin, former Williamston resident. Mrs. Eakin received her B.S. degree in math education from North Carolina State University. She also was granted the M.Ed. in math education from NCSU. Her most recent experience was a mathematics teacher for three years with the Martin County Board of Education. She served as a math instructor for three years at St. Mary’s College. She was also a part-time instructor at Meredith College and Peace College and a teacher assistant at North Carolina State University. Former Instructor at Seminary MELVIN M. WHITE, JR. Teaching Photography Kenneth M. Craig, Jr., who previously served as a Hebrew instructor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has begun his duties as professor of religion. Craig received his B.A. from Wake Forest University, which included a semester of study at Worrell House, London, England. He received his Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has completed all requirements for his Ph.D. from Southern Seminary. He spent one year of doctoral studies at the University of Tel Aviv, Israel. His Ph.D. will be formally awarded in December. 1989. His professional experience also in cludes Garrett Fellow. Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Hebrew in structor, Simmons Bible College. Craig served as pastor of Pisgah Baptist Church, Cloverport. Ky., from 1984-86. He is a meber of the National Association of Professors of Hebrew and Society of Biblical Literature. His editorial experience includes assistant editor and Old Testament book review editor, Pulpit Digest: managing and book review editor, Paradigms, and KENNETH M. CRAIG, JR. Professor of Religion commentary proofreader. Word Publishing Company. In graduate school, Craig won the Broadman Award and was a Fulbright Scholarship Alternate.
