Alumni Happenings Keeping in touch with classmates CLASS OF 1966 The National Geographic Institute has accepted Carolyn Van Ness Dooley for its sununer geogr^hy program at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. In September Carolyn will begin her 23rd year of teaching. CLASS OF 1967 Patricia Pope Brown lives in Ran dolph, NJ and is employed as a Family Therapist with the NJ University of Medi cine and Dentistry. Donna Lynn Freeland was ^ipointed by Gov. Martin to serve on the Historic Board of Commissioners in Hillsborough. Ben Herndon is the Athletic Director at Chancellor High School in Spotsylvania County Virginia. Linda Tingle Searles is the secretary for the Community Relations Office of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in RichnKMid, Va. CLASS OF 1968 Janie Davis Allen is recovering well after donating a kidney to her husband. The operation took place in Novembw 1989. Wayne Carr lives in Beaumont Te?(as and is the Vice-President for Administration for Temple Inland FPC. CLASS OF 1969 Wayne A. Griffin graduated from Old Dominion University in 1989 and woiiu with the Virginia Department of Transpwta- tion. CLASS OF 1970 Tom Alttgood lives in Charlotte is employed by Klutts Homes as an Area Sales Manager. CLASS OF 1976 Doug Gatewood lives in Smithfield, and is part owno' of The Marcon Company; a consultant service for fundraising projects. CLASS OF 1978 Patrick D. Wright is a staff photogra pher at Clemson University. CLASS OF 1979 Darlene Morgan is the General Man ager of the Barrier Island Inn in Duck. CLASS OF 1980 Mark Bodsford is employed by Hei delberg Eastern and is the proud father of Rachel who was bom last September. Catherine Pickens Radd is an Activi ties Therapist at Memorial Hospital in Eas ton, MD. She has been married since 1988 to Eugene W. Radd. Ryan Allen Richardson was bom on February 15, 1990 to Mr. & Mrs. Allen Richardson. Mrs. Richardson is the former Pam Harris. CLASS OF 1982 Rebecca Hinzman Dale lives in Che sapeake, Va and is pursuing a Masters in Guidance and Counseling at Old Dominion University. Krista Newton lives in El Cajon, CA. and is employed by Brinks, Inc. as an Office Manager. She is completeing coursework toward a degree in Elementary Education. Imiuv Kim Powell is the mother of two children. Yvonne Elliott Yarborough is study ing education at UNC-Greensboro and will graduate in 1991. She called the Editor to report that she is not the Sarah Farless Harrell who had died, and graciously accepted the apologies of the editorial staff of Chowan Today. She asks that any of her classmates who would like to contact her will fmd her ‘living’ in Bertie County, m Merry Hill. CLASS OF 1983 Janet Towle Griffin is an instructor at Guilford Technical Community College. CLASS OF 1984 Erval V. Pryce is employed as an ac countant with Randall H. Hagner Mgmt. Co. in Washington, DC. He is also attending the University of Maryland. Joan Marie Simons Williams is em ployed at NC State University as a secretary in the Alumni Office. CLASS OF 1985 Susanne Edwards was married in May to Jefferson Clay Easley, a graduate of Campbell University. Susanne is a graduate of the UNC—Chapel Hill School of Phar macy and is employed as a pharmacist at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. CLASS OF 1986 Joey Lee Mabe works for TC distribu tors in Asheboro as the Merchandise Man ager. CLASS OF 1987 Warren G. Gold lives in Rocky Mount where he is a realtor with the firm of Watley, Wilson, Watson, and Miller. CLASS OF 1988 Twyla G. Duke is the Executive Secre tary for the Small Business Center at Roanoke-Chowan Community College in Ahoskie. CLASS OF 1989 Jennifer Hyatt is the mother of future Chowan student Christopher Andrew Blake Hyatt who celebrated his second birthday in April, 1990. Edna A. Ruffin of Bertie County, a sen ior at Campbell Uni versity, has been in ducted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. RufHn, trust man agement major, and recipient of the Gilbert T. Stephenson Trust Scholarship, is a transfer student from Chowan College. At Campbell she is a member of the Adam Smith Free Enterprise Club, the Campbell Activities Board, BSU, the treasurer of the School of Business Trust Club, and vice president of the Accounting Club. While at Chowan, she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Beta Gamma, Order of Silver Feather, and received the Highest Scholastic Average Award. She has been an assistant in the admissions offices of both colleges. Roberts elected chairman H. Wayne Roberts H. Wayne Roberts, MAS, Class of 1968, Advertising/Premium Division CEO and corporate vice president of Pioneer Balloon Co., was elected chairman of the board of directors of the Specialty Advertising Asso ciation International. Pioneer Balloon is a specialty advertising supplia* headquartered in Wichita, Kansas. The Young Executives of Specialty Ad vertising, presented him the Man of the Year Award in 1986. Roberts has been active in civic and gov- emment affairs, highlighted by his two-term election as mayor of Clarksville, Va. At age 26, he was the youngest mayor ever elected in Virginia. Howie receives award Jeff E. Howie, III, class of 1957, Broker/ Owner of Howie Re alty in Norfolk, has been awarded the RM (Resi dential Member) desig nation by the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers. Howie received his BA degree from Randolph-Macon College, Ashland, Virginia. He has been a real estate practitio ner in Tidewater fw seventeen years. In remembrance... Elizabeth Sewell Parker Elizabeth Sewell Parker, class of 1S>29, died March 28. Mrs. Parker graduated when Chowan was a four-year institution for women. She was a member of the annual staff and one of 36 members of the class of 1929, at that time, the largest to date in the school’s history since 1848. Mrs. Paiicer was the widow of the late El- wood W. Parker, a retired businessman and long-time supporter of Chowan College. Parker Hall men’s dormitory was named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Parker. Mr. Parker, who served on the Board of Trustees for many years, was also influential in the de velopment campaign which evenuiated in the reopening of Chowan College in 1949 (after it was closed during World War II). Mrs. ParicCT, who, in recent years, resided at Indian River Estates, Horida, was a lead ing benefactor of Chowan College. She and her husband presented the college, a gift of $100,000 toward the construction of a new science building which stands today as Camp Hall. She said at the time, “It is essential that Chowan have the new science building. The facility and its modem equipment wiU give the science students the best to be had.” In 1988, Mrs. Parker’s daughter, Susan Parker Kerr, class of 1953, presented Chowan College with the single largest individual commitment in the history of the college for the Mission Excellence Campaign. The Susan Parker Kerr Alumni Gazebo was erected in her honor. President emeritus. Dr. BruceE. Whitaker, commented on Mrs. Elizabeth Sewell Parker, “The Parker family has been instrumental in advancing the college to its present position as one of the nation’s finest private, two-year colleges. Elizabeth was a Chowan alumna of whom we have always had every reason to be proud. She was an insightful and gracious person, the likes of which do not often come our way. She and her motho-, another Chowan alumna, Susie Sewell were two early female supporters of their alma mater, Chowan College.” Stephen H. Davenport, Sr. Stephen H. Davenport, Sr., retired main tenance supervisor at Chowan, died March 23. From Tyrell, Mr. Davenport was a member and deacon of the Murfreesboro Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Sim- mins Davenport, two daughters, Lizabeth D. Brown, of Murfreesboro, Joy Cooke of Wendell, and two sons, Stephen H. Daven port, Jr.,of Wilmington, and Bem Davenport of Murfreesboro. Andrew Jackson Watkins Andrew Jackson Watkins, a former trus tee of Chowan College, from Henderson, died in January at the age of 84 years. From Vance County, he was the son of the late Edward and Kate Parham Watkins. Mr. Watkins was active in and trustee of the First Baptist Church in Henderson. Watkins is survived by his wife, Nora Browning Watkins, and a brother, Straghan H. Watkins, of Henderson.
