Sports Today Lady Braves finish fourth in Region X The Lady Braves softball team concluded their season finishing fourth in the Region X Tournament held in Rock Hill, SC the week end of May 4-5. Friday, May 4 Chowan opened tourna ment play tangling with the top seed Louis- burg College. In a pitchers duel, Louisburg scored two flrst inning runs in defeating the Lady Braves 2-0. Chowan had several chances throughout the game to score, but could not cash in despite a strong pitching performance by Sue Straw (Fairlawn, NJ). Saturday, May 5 the Lady Braves found themselves in the loser’s IwackeL Led by All-Region performer Straw, the Braves put together timely hitting, solid pitching, and good defense to defeat Anderson College, 4- 1, to stay alive in the double elimination tourney. It was not to be, however, for Osborne’s “fighting nine” were eliminated three hours lato' by Spartanburg Methodist 7-1. Hawkins passes 500 victory mark By JACK GOLDBERG A coaching career spanning 32 years and 853 games took a historic turn Monday, April 23 when Coach Jory Hawkins marked his 500th career victory. Veteran Chowan College skipper Hawkins watched cahnly firom the dugout at Newpcal News Appren tice School as his Braves recorded a twinbill sweep of their hosts, 14-3 and 6-3, which in turn rewarded “The Hawk” with career vic- tfflies number 500 and 501. “Basically, it’s just two more ballgames to me,” quipped the Shelby native who took over the Chowan program in 1958. “I’d much rathCT talk about this team’s new school, single season record for victories at 23-13. My 500 career victory mark defmitely takes a back seat to that.” This year’s squad set many individual records, one of which was at the beginning of the season, when the Braves ran off 12 con secutive victories without tasting defeat According to Hawkins, “this year’s team has been a joy to coach, their never give up spirit Post-season honors were awarded to so phomore right-hander Straw, who was named to the All-Region X team for the second consecutive year. Head Coach Rene’ Osbxne’sladiesplayed nearly .500 ball for the season against both conference and Region opponents alike as their 10-11 record indicates. Despite falling in the Region Tournament, Osborne was sat isfied with his ladies’ performance this year. “We rode the arm of, in my opinion, the best pitcher in the league. With a few lucky breaks we could have won the Region, but looking back now, I feel the Lady Braves represented themselves very well,” stated Osborne. Next season will be a rebuilding one as only three players with experience return for their sophomore year, but there is one thing you can counton, come next season the Lady Braves’ softball team will bejustas competi tive and over-achieving as they have been noted fw through the years. has won a lot of games in which we trailed going into the final inning.” Individually, freshman shortstop Scott Rawlins (Newport News, VA) set a new R.B.I. record for the Braves, knocking in 38 runs. Rawlins, flexed his muscles for a team- leading eight homeruns. Fleet-footed sopho more centerfielder Antonio “Buffy” Hol loway (Petersburg, VA) put his name in the record book by stealing 29 bases this year while hitting over .300. The Braves concluded their season losing to Lenoir Community College 9-6 and Anderson College 9-1 in the Region X Tour nament held in Aiken, SC the weekend of May 10-13. Post-season honors were awarded to Holloway, Alec Snead, and also Rawlins. The same trio also wwe selected to the Caro lina Junior College conference 1st Team. Year in review Sunday, May 13 Chowan College closed the doors on the 1989-1990 school year with graduation of the class of 1990. The Chowan College Athletic Department fielded nine intercollegiate teams in ’89-’90 and eight of the nine teams posted winning records. The wrestling program finished the year ranked 5th in the country, women’s volleyball won 35 games finishing 11th in the nation, while men’s basketball won 23 games finishing 2nd in the Region X. Chowan competed in 197 intercollegiate athletic contests winning 131 fora66% success rate. The Braves had numerous All-conference and All-Region X performers, plus 14 All- Americans. Steve Smith (football) and Melvin Cnjsby (wrestling) were named 1st Team, Curtis Whitley (football), Stockton Williams (wrestling) and Tyrone Goins (wrestling) were named to 2nd Team All-Ameiican in their sport. John Reynolds (wrestling) and Joe Hawkins (wrestling) were 3rd team All- Americans. Steve Smith (football) and Cur tis Whitley (football) were named J.C. Grid- Wire Honorable Mention All-Americans while Tom Wilkerson (football) was selected 1st Team J.C. Grid Wire Scholar/Athlete All-American. Victor Balmeceda, Tony Sansone and Martin Horn, all members of the wrestling squad, were named Academic All- Americans. With two programs participating in Na tional Tournaments, wrestling finishing 5th in the nation, and vdleyball 11th, 58 wins in men’s basketball and volleyball, 10 All- Americans and four Academk; All-Ameri cans and an overall 66% winning record, 1989-1990 was another successfiil year for the Braves. Next year should be even better for Chowan College. The Lady Braves take on Hagerstown Junior College and Spartanburg Methodist College. Both schools have strong competitive programs, and the Lady Braves expect plenty of action! 9:00 a.m. Chowan vs. Hagerstown Junior College 10:00 a.m. HJC vs. Spartanburg Methodist College 11:00 a.m. Chowan vs. Spartanburg Methodist College The 1990-91 Volleyball season with (40) matches will be a demanding challenge. Matches include junior and senior colleges in North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia. Our aim is to better last year’s record: 35-13! Region X Champs! District 9 Champs!
