McCrary, trustee board chairman, of R^eigh, and recommended to the board that Chowan resume four-year institu tional status. Dr. Jerry F. Jackson, president of the college, told the board, “1 recommend that the trustees ap prove the four-year institution beginning with the fall semester of 1992. There is a need for a four- year Baptist college in eastern North Carolina, because the closest private four-year college is over 65 miles away.” “Another part of the college family needs to be considered in this decision, and that is the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, because Chowan is one of six institutions associated with the convention.” According to Dr. Jackson, the Convention desires to be a part of the process, and the Council on Christian Higher Education will appoint a committee to visit the campus and study the request for a change in status. The Council will make a recommendation to the Executive Committee and General Board of the Baptist State Conven tion of N.C. Their approval is expected to be given in early 1991. Chowan College, which was founded in 1848, operated as a four- year college until 1937. Students who arc currently enrolled at Chowan may have the option of enrolling as juniors in the fall of 1992 to pursue a bachelor’s degree. After beginning four-year status, the college will continue to offer a number of associate degree programs, as well as new four-year degree programs. A transitional committee will be appointed to study and oversee plans for the four-year change.
