Students and alumni volunteers spent many evenings in McSweeney Hall telephoning for Chowan College and the Alumni Loyalty Fund. After 19 nights of calling from October 2 through Novem ber 6, $21,837 in pledges from 558 individuals was raised. Director of Alumni Services and Annual Giving, Sven VanBaars, reports callers reached almost half of the alumni for whom the college has phone numbers. “Almost everyone we talked with was interested in hearing about Dr. Jackson, the new president of the college, and other developments at the school,” he said. Pledges to the phonathon support student scholar ships and work study opportunities. The goal of the Aliunni Loyalty Fund this year is $45,000. Serving as more than a fund raiser, the phonathon is an im portant vehicle for updating alumni home addresses for use by Chowan and by alumni wishing to contact former classmates. VanBaars expressed his appreciation for volunteer callers and supporters of the phonathon. “It was a great effort by all those involved. We wanted to talk with as many Chowan alumni as possible and getting this level of support is very satisfying.” Chowan Today — Winter, 1990 — PAGE 13
