Four new names added to Hall of Fame
Hall of Famers Bobby Gray, Gerald “Tiny" Matthews, Robert Alligood, and
Daryl Allen display their plaques.
The Braves Qub hosted its sixth
annual Hall of Fame Banquet October
13, homecoming night, following the
Chowan Braves’ 61-0 rally against
Potomac State.
Four new names were added to the
prestigious Chowan Hall of Fame that
evening; Daryl Allen, former Hertford
County High School football coach;
Robert Alligood, superintendent of
Washington County Schools; Bobby
Gray, account manager for Quinn
Wholesale Company in Wilmington,
N.C.; and Gerald ‘Tiny” Matthews,
executive chef and cafeteria manager
for Research Triangle Park firm,
Wandell and Golterman Technologies,
Inc.
Tommy Fortes, Braves Oub
president, addressed the audience and
recognized former Hall of Fame
inductees and members of the Braves
Club who were present
Hertford County Athletic Director
Richard Murray inducted his long-time
friend. Coach Daryl Allen, into the
Chowan Hall of Fame.
“It has been an honor and a privi
lege for me to be associated with a
man who has done so much for the
young people of Hertford County and
his commuruty and church as well,”
stated Mr. Murray.
Coach Allen, who played both
football and baseball at Chowan in the
mid-fifties before beginning an
outstanding high school coaching
career, responded to the remarks,
‘This is a real honor to be selected for
the Hall of Fame. I can look back at all
the good times I had while attending
Chowan but I can also say that I
learned some positive things about life
while I was here, and I have used those
as instruments to teach the kids I have
since coached.”
From Perquimans County, Coach
Allen, who is now an assistant football
coach at Chowan, posted an overall
record of 249-98-6, which included
four Eastern State titles at both
Ahoskie High and Hertford County
High School.
Former Chowan College athletic
director and football coach. Dr. Herb
AppenzeUer, inducted Robert Alligood
into the Hall of Fame.
AppenzeUer reminisced. “When
Robert Alligood decided to attend
Chowan, I knew we had turned the
comer because we received an out
standing student-athlete as well as a
bom leader.”
Robert Alligood lettered in both
football and baseball while at Chowan
during the years 1952-54. After
serving as principal of Aurora,
Ahoskie and J.H. Rose High Schools,
Alligood now continues his 30-year
love affair with education as a superin
tendent of schools.
“1 would like to express my grati
tude to the Braves Qub for this
honor,” acknowledged Alligood. “It’s
on behalf of my family and my fomier
Chowan teammates that 1 proudly
accept this honor.”
Chowan’s vice president for athletic
administration. Coach Jim Garrison,
inducted one of his former players as
he spoke about Bobby Gray, the first
Junior College All-American Coach
Garrison had at Chowan.
Garrison quipped, “I remember a
particular game with Gardner-Webb in
which Bobby had three teeth knocked
out while retuming a kick-off. Instead
of calling it quits, he had his mouth
packed with cotton and immediately
returned to the game.”
“This is something I never thought
would happen to me,” Gray expressed.
“I’ve been fortunate to play under the
direction of three good college coaches
and Jim Garrison was one of those.
The most important thing he taught me
was that there was more in life than
just winning football games.”
Gray, a native of Roanoke Rapids,
N.C., was tabbed as a NJCAA first
team All-American halfback while
being voted as Best All-Around
Athlete in football and track at
Chowan.
The fourth inductee, Gerald “Tiny”
Matthews was inducted by Coach
Jerry Hawkins, baseball coach, and
former offensive line coach with the
Chowan Braves football team.
“The most amazing thing I remem
ber about ‘Tiny” Matthews was that
for a young man who weighed around
300 pounds, he had the quickest feet of
any offensive lineman I ever had the
pleasure to coach,” said Hawkins.
Matthews culminated his two-year
Chowan career in 1967 when he was
tabbed both second team NJCAA All-
American and first team All-Confer
ence, Region 10 at offensive tackle.
“This is quite an honor for me,” said
Matthews. “There was a spirit of
closeness among the students and the
teachers while I was at Chowan and I
still feel that closeness when I’ve
returned to the campus over the past
few years. Please don’t ever lose that
closeness!”
After their official induction into
the Hall of Fame, each honoree was
presented a beautiful ring to com
memorate the event
New wrestling coach
takes charge of team
The Chowan Braves wrestling team
begins a new era under new head
coach, David Maas, following last
year’s phenomenal 17-0-2 season,
capped off by a 5th place national
ranking and five All-Americans,
including a national champion.
It may look like a hard act to
follow, but David Maas comes to
Chowan College highly qualified and
experienced as a wrestling coach.
From Stoughton, Wisconsin, he moved
to South Carolina where he attended
Inno High School in Irmo, S.C. He
wrestled at 98 lbs his sophomore year,
105 lbs his junior year. He received
the bachelor’s degree in physical
education from Appalachian State
University, in 1988, where he was a
four-year letterman in wrestling at 118
and 126 lbs. He was a runner-up in the
Southem Conference Championship
his jimior and senior years, losing both
years in overtime.
Maas served as an assistant coach at
David Maas
Appalachian State for two years prior
to coming to Chowan. He is single and
resides in Murfreesboro.
Coach Maas begins his first season
at Chowan with four retuming letter-
men and two All-Americans. Back for
their sophomore year are Stockton
Williams and Tyrone Goins, who both
finished fourth in the nation last year
at 118 and 150 lbs.
The 1990-91 team shows a lot of
potential in the lower weights. With
the return of Goins, Williams,
Balmeceda and Dial, plus some top-
notch freshmen in the upper-weights,
it looks to be another very good season
for the Braves.
They are already off to a 2-0 start,
defeating Norfolk State 26-18, and
defeating Newport News Apprentice,
46-6.
