Braves basketball opens
season on winning note
The Chowan Braves men’s basket
ball team opened its season on a
winning note November 14, humbling
Pitt Conwnunity College, 104-46.
Sophomore Fred Vinson, (Murfrees
boro, N.C.) led four Braves in double
figures frying the nets for six thi^
pointers en-route to a game high 24
points.
The weekend of November 16 and
17, the Braves participated in the
Hagerstown Invitational held at
Hagerstown, Maryland. Friday night,
the Braves defeated Allegany Commu
nity College of Pennsylvania, led by
the record setting performance of
James Thompson (Culpeper, Va.).
Thompson shattered the Braves’
record of three point shots he had set
last year with seven, by cormecting on
eight long-range bombs. He led four
Braves in double figures with 24
points. Saturday night, the Braves fell
to the host team, Hagerstown Commu
nity College, 98-78. despite freshman
Wilbert Hunter’s (Raleigh, N.C.) 24
points and Thompson’s 20. Hunter and
Thompson were named to the All-
Toumament Team.

The Braves loaded their vans and
headed South to participate in the
Pepsi-Cola National Invitational
Tournament held in Ocala, Florida,
November 22 through 24. The opening
night the Braves dropped a tough 72-
69 decision to the host school. Central
Florida Community College. Chowan
was led by sophomores James Th
ompson and Fred Vinson with 16
points each. The second round saw the
Braves knock off Palm Beach Com
munity College, 91-89, in an offensive
display. Chowan’s “long-range
bomber” James Thompson led four
Braves in double figures, setting a new
tournament record, while tying his
own school record with 8 three-
pointers en route to a team-leading 29
points. The Braves concluded their
tournament dropping a tough 56-46
decision to number 8 nationally ranked
Butler County Community College. In
a defensive battle, the Braves held
Butler to only 20 points in the second
half. Chowan was led by James
Thompson who pumped in 12 points
in a losing cause.

Golf team finishes with best
fall record ever: 42-5
The Chowan College men’s golf
team placed the finishing touches on
an outstanding fall campaign by
capturing top honors at a four-team
tournament at the Sleepy Hole Golf
Course in Portsmouth, Va. recently.
The Braves teamed to card a 314
which was four strokes better than
second placed Averett College.
Newport News Apprentice was third at
333 while Hampton University
checked in at 367 for fourth place.
Lance Wilton won medalist honors
for the Braves as he toured the 18 hole
course in 75 strokes. Finishing close
behind him was Don Donatello (77)
while Joe Sibley and Philip Smoak
each carded an 81.
Under the watchful eye of veteran
coach Bill Sowell, the Chowan duffers
finished with the best fall record (42-5
in overall competition) in the school’s
history.
“I’m very proud of the accomplish
ments of this year’s team,” stated
Sowell. “Freshmen comprise the
majority of this team and if they do
their classwork over the winter, they’ll
be in contention for both regional and
national honors next spring.”
Chowan Braves men’s basketball team
quickly approaching, the Braves now
prepare for their Conference and
Region X opponents, hosting their
final four games before the break in
the Helms Center. December 3, the
Braves hosted Craven Community
College in a non-conference encoun
ter. Chowan hosted two Conference
and Region X rivals Friday and
Saturday nights, December 7 and 8. In
their conference opener Friday night,
the Braves tangled with Anderson
College; Saturday evening, Chowan
battled the boards with Spartanburg
Methodist College.
The Chowan Braves conclude the
first half of the basketball schedule on
December 10 entertaining Lenoir
Community College in a Region X
game.

winning football season
The Chowan Braves football squad
ended their season dropping a tough
14-10 decision to North Greenville in
a defensive battle. The Braves held the
Mounties in check the majority of the
afternoon giving up only 160 yards of
total offense.
Chowan’s “Phenomenal freshman”
David Perry, entered the game with
1,113 yards rushing and was 83 yards
short of the school record of 1,196, set
by Ervin Bryson in 1987, when he
suffered a collarbone injury and left
the game in the first quarter after
gaining only 13 yards. For the year.
Perry finished his first season as a
Brave with 1,126 yards, while scoring
12 touchdowns.
Sophomore defensive end Tim
Canada, who had 10 tackles and a
blocked punt, got Chowan on the
board in the first quarter when he
picked up a blocked punt and returned
it 36 yards for a touchdown.
North Greenville got six points on a
blocked punt in the first quarter to tie
the score. The Braves took a 10-7 lead
on a 35-yard field goal by Chuck
Komegay in the second quarter.
Chowan recorded its 27th winning
season in Coach Garrison’s 33 sea
sons, finishing with a record of 5-4.
Garrison is currently tied for third in
career victories among active coaches
in the NJCAA with 182.
