Sports Today Wrestlers finish season 10th in national ranking The Chowan wrestling program proved to the nation, February 18 and 19 that they were the “Beast of the East” by finishing tenth in the Na tional Junior College Athletic Asso ciation National Tournament held in Bismark, North Dakota. The Braves, who qualified seven wrestlers for the nationals, by virtue of their third place finish in the Mid-Atlantic Districts earlier this month, flew into Bismark knowing what task lay ahead of them. Chowan was led by two-time Mid- Atlantic District Champion, Stockton Williams. Williams, wrestling at 118 pounds, finished his career at Chowan College with a third place national finish, bettering his fourth place show ing in last year’s tournament. The Braves garnered four All- Americans, led by Williams; Derick Peartree (134 lbs) third place; Victor Balmaceda (142 lbs) sixth place; and Bryan Richardson (126 lbs) eighth place. The Braves finished with a team total of 36.75 points, good enough to be the top team representing the East ern section of the United States at the nationals. The two-day tournament featured 61 junior college wrestling programs from across the nation. In only his first season as head coach of the Braves, Dave Maas has carved a niche for himself among the coun try’s best coaches with his program’s strong showing. For the year, Chowan amassed a 12-4 overall record, seven qualifiers to the Nationals, four All- Americans and a tenth national rank ing in the final polls. Next season appears to be very bright for Maas and his grapplers as All-Americans, Pear- tree and Richardson, return for their sophomore season. Also returning next season will be Pete Siaikas and Kevin Sommers who both participated in the nationals gaining viuable mat expe rience. With two top finishes in the last two years, nine All-Americans, and a veteran squad returning for next year, don’t be surprised to see the Chowan Blue and White challenging again for national honors. Two Chowan stars sign college contracts Danny Lindsey Standout offensive tackle Danny Lindsey signed to receive an athletic scholarship to attend James Madison University. Lindsey, a NJCAA 2nd Team All-American and 1st Team AU- Region X and Coastal Conference selection. He helped anchor an offen sive line which averaged 5.1 yards per carry and 2,061 yards for the season. Troy Fowlkes Head Football Coach Jim Garrison announced the signing of linebacker Troy Fowlkes to an athletic scholar ship to attend Northeast Louisiana University. Fowlkes, a 1st team All- Region X and second Team all coastal Conference selection this year, was a mainstay at middle linebacker for the Chowan Braves. Another Brave rolls to victory. Hawkins resigns, Moore appointed head coach Jerry Hawkins Jack Moore Jerry Lee Hawkins, a 32-year vet eran professor and coach at Chowan, resigned his position in December cit ing personal reasons for leaving. Hawkins joined the faculty in 1958 and his teams posted over 500 wins. He was recognized in 1970 when the college yearbook was dedicated to him, in 1985 when he was inducted into the Order of Lux et Veritas (the honorary organization for 25-year employees) and in 1987 when he was inducted into the Chowan College Sports Hall of Fame. The Jerry Lee Hawkins Baseball Scholarship is named in his honor and the baseball field was named in his honor in 1987. Jack Moore is serving as interim coach for the Braves’ baseball pro gram. Moore, a native of Bowling Green, Va., attended Chowan College where he attained the associate degree. While at Chowan, Moore was a two-year starting pitcherforthe Braves. He com pleted his undergraduate work at Gard ner-Webb College, attaining the B.S. degree in history. Moore was named Most Valuable Pitcher his senior year. Moore has also completed graduate work at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. He served as assistant coach for Chowan for the past three seasons. Chowan Braves 20-7—11th consecutive season of 20 or more wins for Head Coach Bob Burke. Chowan seeded # 3 in the Region X Tourney held at Chowan. THE CHOWAN COLLEGE BRAVES CLUB The Braves Club Chowan College has some of the most exciting plays in football, and some of the best shots in basketball in eastern North Carolina, not to mention its excellence in women’s volleyball, softball, and basketball, outstanding baseball, men and women’s golf and tennis, and wrestling. And right behind Chowan athletics is one of the most exciting sports club in the eastern North Carolina: The Braves Qub. Privileges of Membership Members of the Braves Club receive season tickets to all athletic events, reserved special seating at athletic events, and a newsletter which is pub lished monthly about Chowan athletic programs. They also receive invita tions to attend athletic banquets and are served refreshments in the press box at football games and in the Braves Qub Room at other athletic events. Gift Opportunities The club’s fiscal year is that of the college’s June 1 - May 31.
