Golfers tee up outstanding season finish 36-18

The Braves’ golf program teed it
up Tuesday, March 26 defeating Lou-
isburg College on the Green Hill Coun
try Qub course in Louisburg, NC. The
Braves shot a team total 309 led by
medalist Don Donatello (Qearwater,
FL) who shot a 76. Rick Peel (Win
chester, VA) and Chowan’s only
sophomore, Chiis Carter (Richmond,
VA), both shot 77 as the Braves putted
by the Hurricanes.
The weekend of April 6-7 found
the Braves in the mountains of west
ern North Carolina participating in the
Brevard Invitational. Chowan battled
the elements as fog moved onto the
course limiting them to only 27 holes
rather than the normal 36. Despite the
weather the Braves finished second
out of nine teams that participated,
shooting a score of 488.

wood Country Qub in Ahoskie, NC.
Low medalist for the B raves was Rick
Peel who shot a 77 while fellow fresh
man Greg Vaughan chipped in with a
78.
The following afternoon the Braves
fmished ninth out of fifteen teams in
the Newport News Invitational held
at the Sleepy Hole Country Club in
Portsmouth, Virginia. Low medalist
for Chowan was Don Donatello who
shot an 81, and Phil Abrams (Wilson,
North Carolina) with an 84.
The culmination of an outstanding
season occurred April 21-23 when the
Braves teed up with their Region X
counterparts at the Pine HoUow Coun
try Qub in Clayton, NC, site of the
tournament. Led by medalist Rick
Peel, who shot a two-day tournament
total of 148 arxl Phil Abrams, 154, the
Braves finished third in the confer
ence and fourth in the Region X final
standings. Post season honors were
awarded to Peel who was named to
the All-Region X and AU-Conference
teams for his impressive rookie sea
son. Peel represented Chowan as their
medalist at the National Tournament
to be held in Odessa, Texas June 3-7.

Lady Braves have building year, Yarborough named All-Region
The Lady Braves traveled to Rock
Hill, South Carolina, site of the Re
gion X Tournament, the weekend of
May 3-4. Entering the tourney as the
No. 5 seed, Chowan faced fourth-
seeded Anderson College in Friday’s
opening round. Picking up four un
earned runs in the first and three more
in the fourth was enough to propel
Anderson to a 9-1 victory. Freshman
hurler Wendy Yarborough surrendered
just two hits during the game but was
the victim of some shoddy fielding by
the Braves. The Lady Braves banged
out five hits as Chrissie Perkinson,
Julie Jordon, Amy Collins, Mary Far
ley and Tracey ChapeU all had one hit
each.
With the opening round loss, the
Lady Braves were forced to play the
first game Saturday where they gave
third-seeded Spartanburg Methodist all
they could handle before dropping a

Sports year in review

lege closed the doors on the 1990-91
school year with graduation of the class
of 1991. With plans already in prog
ress for 1991-1992, now is a good
time to reflect on the past year.
The Chowan CoUege Athletic De
partment fielded nine intercollegiate
teams in ’90-91 and seven of the nine
teams posted winning records. The
wrestling program finished the year
ranked tenth in the nation; women’s
volleyball won 33 games wiiming the
conference championship, finished
18th in the nation; and men’s basket
ball won 22 games, finished second in
the Region X. Chowan competed in
245 intercollegiate athletic contest
winning 143 for a 59% success rate.
The Braves had numerous All-
Conference and All-Region X per
formers plus ten All-Americans. Tim
Canada (Football) was named 1st
Team, Danny Lindsey (Football),
StocktonWilliams (Wrestling), Dar-
rick Peartree (Wrestling), and Turner
Williams (Baseball) were named to
2nd Team All-American in their sport.
Victor Balmaceda (Wrestling) and
tied the games thanks to a two-run
single by sophomore co-captain Pam
Synder in the fourth inning. Spar
tanburg then won the game by plating
a pair of fifth inning runs and one in
the sixth, all of which came off errors.
Despite fanning 10 batters and giving
up just four hits, Yarborough was
charged with the loss as all five runs
scored against her were unearned.

the Braves offensively with two hits
Following the tournament, Yarbor
ough was an overwhelming choice to
the All-Region X Team. During her
83 innings pitched this season, the
Salem, Virginia native surrendered 87
runs mowing down 98 batters via the
strikeout route.
The Braves, who finished their sea
son with a 3-18 overall mark, lose
only three players from the squad.

3rd team All-American status, while
David Perry (Football) was named to
the J. C. Grid-wire Honorable Men
tion All-American Squad. Tim Can
ada (Football) was selected to the 2nd
Team J. C. Grid-wire All-American
Team, While Chuck Komegay (Foot
ball) was selected Honorable Mention
J. C. Grid-wire Scholar/Athlete All-
American. Fred Vinson (Basketball)
was named Player-of-the Year in the
Carolinas Junior CoUege Conference.
Nine student-athletes were named
to the prestigious Who’s Who Among
Students in American Junior Colleges
in 1991. They are: Chris Aycock
(Trainer), Lisa Bunce (Volleyball),
Mike Chrissie (Football), Tyrone
Goins (Wrestling), Chuck Komegay
(Football), Chris Rtt (Football), James
Thompson (Basketball), Fred Vinson
(Basketball) and Joyce Williams
(Women’s Basketball).
With two programs finishing na
tionally ranked, 91 wins in men’s bas
ketball, golf and volleyball, nine All-
American and an overall 59% win
ning record, 1990-1991 was another
outstanding year for the Braves.
