Sports Today New coaches assisting in athletic department Three assistant football coaches named Kevin Cox Kevin Cox joins the staff this year as the Defensive Backfield Coach. Cox attended Chowan for two years, 1985-86. While at Chowan, Cox earned 1st Team honors as a punter and 2nd Team Defensive Back on the All-Conference team. Cox represented Chowan in the North-South All-Star game his sophomore season. After graduating from Chowan, Cox continued his education while earning an athletic scholarship at Middle Tennessee State University. He re ceived the bachelor of arts degree in physical education and health in 1990. Besides football, Cox also played college and semi-pro rugby in Nash ville, Tennessee. Cox served two years as an assistant coach at Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. A native of Chesapeake, and a graduate of Western Branch High School, he is single. Todd Middleton Todd Middleton begins his first season at Chowan College as the De fensive Line Coach. Middleton attended Lees- McRae College for i one year after transferring from Dodge City Community College in Kansas. While at Lees-McRae, Middleton earned All-Region X and All-Confer ence honors. He was selected to play in the Coastal Conference All-Star game as a member of the South squad. After graduating with an associate of science degree, Middleton transferred to Wake Forest University where he earned his bachelor of arts degree in communica- Hall of Fame to honor first woman inductee Braves Club President, Tommy Forbes, announced the names of the three men and, for the first time, a - woman who will be inducted into the " ^ ' * Chowan College Collins Sports Hall of Fame. The four inductees are: Janet Collins, Joe Gro, Don Redford and Ted Rollins. The Braves Club, a non-profit organi zation, sponsors the Sports Hall of Fame which honors individuals for con tributions to the Chowan athletic program. The four inductees will be in troduced prior to the kick-off of the Braves football game against Nassau Community College on Saturday, October 26,1991. Following the football game, there will be a banquet in Thomas Cafeteria scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Janet Collins, Joe Gro, Don Redford and Ted Rollins will join 25 other dis tinguished members of the Chowan Sports Hall of Fame. Janet Collins becomes the first woman to be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame. Collins, a native of Richmond, Virginia, attended West- hampton College of the University of Richmond and earned the bachelor of science degree and master of education degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Collins has done additional graduate work at South eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Texas Women's University, Massachu setts Maritime Academy, Rocky Mountain College, George Williams College, Texas A&M, Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before coming to Chowan in 1964, she was instructor of Science and Physical Education and the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Creed- moor High School in Creedmoor, North Carolina. Under the direction of Collins, Chowan College began its volleyball program and Women's Recreation Association. WRA assisted the Department of Physical Education and Athletics in providing varsity athletics (basketball, volleyball, and softball), intramurals, and pep squads. These activities were ogranized to meet the needs of female athletes. For eleven years Coach Collins directed the program coaching all three sports while serving as a professor in the Physical Education Department. In 1975 Chowan College wanted conference membership and affiliated with the North Carolina Association for Inter collegiate Athletics for Women. The volleyball program, under Collins' guidance, for three years was competi tive in the NCAIAW Division III Slate Tournament by placing second on one occasion and third on two others. In 1978 Chowan joined the National Junior College Athletic Association. By joining the NJ.C.A.A. women's athletics became eligible for regional and national competition. Individual coaches were selected, scholarships made available, and recruitment of female athletes began in earnest. Volleyball, under the direction of Collins, has flourished. Since joining the N.J.C.A.A., Collins, who begins her 28th year as head coach, has amassed an impressive 327-184 record. Under her guidance the Lady Braves have participated in the N.J.C.A.A. Region X Tournament every year placing third in 1978,1980,1981,1983,1987,and 1988; second in 1979,1982 and 1990; and first in 1985,1986, and 1989. She has been awarded the presitigous Lux Et Veritas from Chowan College for 25 years of service, recognized by the National Girls and Women in Sports Day Certification by North Carolina Amateur Sports, while being named Region X Coach-of-the-Year twice and District 9 Coach-of-the-Year three times. tions. An outstanding defensive end, Middleton was a three-year letterman for the Deamon Deacons. A native of Lake Worth, Florida and a graduate of Lake Worth Community High School, Middleton and his wife Carole reside in Murfreesboro. Darrell Garrison Darrell Garrison joins the staff this year as the wide- receiver coach. Gar rison will team up with his father Jim, to become one of the few father-son coaching combinations in the college ranks. Gairison attended Chowan for two years, 1985-1987. While at Chowan, Garrison was a wide-receiver, earning All-Conference honors and being named the Most Valuable Receiver. He was selected to play in the North-South All-Star Game, representing the Braves. He was also named to Who's Who Among American Junior College students and the Phi Theta Kappa honor roll his sophomore year. After graduat ing from Chowan with an associate of science degree in business administra tion, he attended East Carolina Univer sity earning a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education. A native of Murfreesboro, and a graduate of Murfreesboro High School, Garrison is one of the bachelors on the staff. New women’s basketball coach Tammy Perry has joined the coaching staff as the new women's basketball coach. Perry, a graduate of Hobgood Academy in Hob- good, North Carolina and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, holds a bachelor of arts degree in Middle School Science and English Education. She served as a Southern Baptist journeyman in Zambia in Cenu^l Africa during 1989-90. During her stay in Zambia, Tammy coached basketball at the high school and university level. She served as an assistant coach at Hobgood Academy school this past season. Perry currently resides in Scotland Neck and is single. "ALUMNI DAY" Lady Braves Power Volleyball Saturday, October 25,1991 has been designated as "Alumni Day" in the Jesse Helms Physical Education Center. The Lady Braves take on Anderson College and Catonsville Community College. Both schools have strong competitive programs, and the Lady Braves expect plenty of action! 9:00 a.m. Chowan vs. Catonsville Community College 10:00 a.m. CCC vs. Anderson College The volleyball season with (40) matches will be a demanding challenge. Matches include junior and senior colleges in North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia.
