Lady Braves continue
winning volleyball streak
The Lady Braves volleyball team con
cluded their regular season the weekend
of October 25-26 hosting non
conference foe Catonsville Community
College and conference rival Anderson
College.
In its opener against Anderson, the
Lady Braves were dealt a 2-15, 10-15,
15-11, 10-15 setback which left
Anderson with the Region's number one
seed (both teams finished regional and
conference play at 5-1 to share con
ference honors, but Anderson was award
ed the higher region seed due to total
points scored).
Following the loss, Chowan re
bounded to defeat Catonsville
Community College 15-10, 15-4 before
concluding its regular season the next
day when the Lady Braves again clipped
Catonsville 15-10, 15-3.
The Lady Braves, armed with an
outstanding 30-8 regular season record,
competed in the Region X Tournament
in Greenville, South Carolina, October
31 through November 1.
Seeded second in the five-team affair,
Chowan took on third-seeded Spartans-
burg Methodist during Thursday's
opening round where the Lady Braves
posted a 10-15, 15-4, 15-9 victory.
With the first round win, Chowan
advanced to Friday’s winner's bracket
matchup against top-seeded Anderson
College where they dropped a lough 15-
6, 9-15, 15-9 match.
The loss forced the Lady Braves into
an elimination contest against North
Greenville where they topped the Lady
Mounties 15-10, 12-15, 15-8. With
only a 30-minute breather between
matches, Chowan was forced to quickly
move into the championship round
against Anderson College. The Lady
Braves gave it their best shot, but on a
grueling day in which Chowan was
forced to play three matches, it proved
to be their downfall as the Lady Trojans
captured the Region X title by virtue of
its 15-9, 15-8 victory.
Chowan, who finished with an
outstanding 32-10 record, placed a trio
of its players on the All-Region X team
as sophomore Captain Patty Trudel,
sophomore Mary Grimm, and freshman
Jody Lindstrom were named to the
prestigious squad.
Lady Braves coach Janet Collins also
saw two of her performers tabbed as
members of the All-Tournament team
with the inclusion of Trudel and
Lindstrom.

Basketball coach Burke beginning twelfth season
The dribbling of basketballs in the
Helms Center can now be heard as the
Chowan Braves prepare to open their
1991-92 season. Veteran Head Coach
Bob Burke, beginning his twelfth
season, finds himself with his most
experienced team ever, returning four
starters from last season’s 22-8 squad, as
well as six other players who
contributed significantly their freshman
season. Burke will look to Wilbert
Hunter (Raleigh, NC), Harold Tyson
(Charlotte, NC), Melvin Brooks
(Elizabeth City, NC) and Corey Baker
(Charlotte, NC) all starters last season
to lead the Braves on the court this year.
Hunter, a 6’5" swingman who averaged
11 points and 4.3 rebounds a game his
freshman year, was named All-
Tournament in three out of five
tournaments Chowan participated in last
year. According to Burke, "Hunter has
improved his strength by putting on
weight this summer and I am looking to
him to have an excellent year while
serving as our perimeter defensive
specialist." Tyson, a 6’5" interior player
of a season ago, averaged 10.3 points
and seven rebounds an outing to lead the
team in that category. Tyson, voted

team’s Most Outstanding Defensive
Player last year, is expected to be one of
the premier interior players in the league
his sophomore year. Brooks, a 6'8"
center, averaged 10 points while snaring
five rebounds a game through the second
half of last season after recovering from
a serious leg injury. Coach Burke will
look to Brooks to team up with Tyson
to produce a nice one-two punch in the
Braves interior game.
Team leader and back court ace. Baker,
who averaged six points last season
while dishing out five assists, will be
counted on heavily this year. "Baker's
leadership in the backcourt will be a key
to our success this season," stated
Burke. Complimenting the Braves this
season will be sophomores Andy Kelly;
(Carthage, NC), Marlon Jones (Falls
Church, VA), Greg Taylor (Richmond,
VA), Terry Williams (Winterville, NC),
and Andre Nixon (Four Oaks, NC).
Kelly, a 6'5" guard, averaged five points
a game as the Braves' first substitute
last season, finishing the year tied for
the team’s leading free throw shooter.
"Kelly has improved his strength level
and perimeter skills and will be looked
upon to be the Braves key three point
shooter," Burke commented. "The return
of these five players who all played last
year will only strengthen our team and
must contribute for us to be successful,"
stated Burke. Coach Burke has bolstered
this year's team with a solid freshman
class. According to Burke, "the obvious
experience of our sophomores are
showing up through our early practices
and making it difficulty for our
freshmen to showcase their skills. 1
think in time, however, there are several
freshmen who will make solid
contributions to our team’s success."
When asked about his impressions of
this year’s squad through the first three
weeks of practice Burke commented,
"we are further ahead in all aspects of
our game due to our experience, and 1
hope that experience will give us the
edge in some early season National
Tournaments which could give us a
high national ranking."
The Braves will once again feature a
national schedule playing program’s
from 11 different states and participating
in four major tournaments. Chowan,
this season, besides hosting their own
very successful NBC Classic, will play
in the Pepsi NIT, Hagerstown Hawk
Invitational and the Walker JUCO
Classic in Alabama, where Chowan will
play defending National Championship
Aquinas Junior College of Nashville,
Tennessee.
With experience as the cornerstone,
Burke is looking for another successful
year getting into the finals of the
Region X and hopefully getting the
opportunity to win the Region and
compete in the National Tournament in
Hutchinson, Kansas.
In a recent publication of "The
Sporting News," a national publication,
the Braves were ranked No. 14 among
the pre-season Top 40 Teams in the
Nation.
The Braves tipped off their season
November 15, participating in the
Hagerstown Hawk Classic in Hagers
town, Maryland.
