Faculty Happenings New staff join college administration Kevin L. Clary Kevin L. Clary was recently ap pointed director of annual gifts and alumni services in the office of development. Since 1989 he has served as assistant director for student enroll ment in the office of admissions at Chowan. "I am delighted to announce the appointment of Kevin Clary as director of annual gifts and alumni services. He brings to the position much experience in student enrollment and financial services as well as expertise in working with parent and student organizations. He is an asset to the office of development and will serve our alumni well," said E. Vincent Tilson, vice present for development. Clary replaces Sven VanBaars who left to lake a position at James Madison University. Clary will direct the activities in the Chowan alumni office where he will be responsible for all alumni services including homecoming activities, alumni phonathon, chapter meetings, and other alumni events. In addition to that, he will direct fund raising efforts with parents of current students. A graduate of Virginia Wesleyan College with the bachelor’s degree in political science. Clary is obtaining the master of arts degree in higher education administration at the College of William and Mary. He previously worked as an admissions counselor and assistant director of admissions and financial aid at Virginia Wesleyan College. As the assistant director for student enrollment at Chowan, Clary has visited and recruited students from schools throughout the eastern United Slates. He has coordinated campus events, im plemented an alumni/admissions net work for Chowan, edited an admissions newsletter for the college, and compiled statistical data for use in student enrollment. He also worked with the Parents' Council and co-advised the student organization, ACES, which he will continue in his new position. At Virginia Wesleyan, he was part of a team which was responsible for a substantial increase in applications to the college during the 1984-88 academic years. Clary is a member of the Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, serving on the committee for the 1987 southeastern conference for that organization. He has also served on numerous committees as a member of the Carolina Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. He holds memberships in the American and Virginia associations of this organization. He is single and resides in Murfreesboro. Craig A. Vick Craig A. Vick has been appointed director of personnel and assistant director of financial aid at Chowan College. He previously served as assistant director for student enrollment and financial planning at Chowan. "With Craig’s years of experience at Chowan in a position with close people contact, we are pleased that Craig will be able to apply these skills in support of the employees of Chowan College" states John Nesbitt, vice president for business administration. Vick earned the associate degree in accounting from Chowan College in 1983. He graduated with honors from East Carolina University with a bachelor's degree in business adminis tration in 1985. He has also served as an education consultant to other in stitutions of higher learning. Vick was PAGE 4 — Chowan Today — Winter, 1991 Craig A.Vick one of six young men who participated in a six-week group study exchange to Maharashtra, India during January and February of 1991 as part of an international Rotary Club exchange program. He represented Rotary District 771 located in the northeastern section of North Carolina. In 1987, he was selected one of the Outstanding Young Men in America. He is currently pursuing the master's degree in education at East Carolina University. Vick is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard G. Vick of Ahoskie. Kevin Stroud Kevin Stroud has joined the staff of Chowan College as assistant director for student enrollment in the office of admissions. He will work primarily as a recruiter in North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia. "We are pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Stroud as the assistant director for student enrollment at Chowan. He brings with him a strong appeal to young people and previous experience in working in an admissions office," states Winslow Carter, vice president for student enrollment Stroud received the B.S. degree in government with a minor in business administration from Campbell Univer sity, where he also worked part-time as an admissions counselor. From Rocky Mount, he is a graduate of Southern Nash Senior High School, where he lettered in football, and was the number two seed on the tennis team. He was the recipient of the Campbell Merit Academy Scholarship while at Camp bell University. He previously was employed with Carolina Telephone and Telegraph, Commercial Builders and Belk De partment Store in Rocky Mount. He is single and resides in Mur- fi-eesboro. Peter Squire Peter Squire has joined the staff at Chowan College as director of printing technology development, a new position at the college established to fundraiser and recruit new students fw the Krueger School of Graphic Communications. He comes to Chowan from northern Virginia where he was employed in the printing industry. "I am delighted to announce the employment of Peter Squire as our new director of printing technology develop ment. Peter’s knowledge of the printing industry and desktop publishing will enable him to work well with printers, graphics foundation members and students interested in pursuing a career in printing technology at Chowan," slates E. Vincent Tilson, vice president fw development Kevin Clary Squire has ten years of sales ex perience working with a large variety of clients including Mobil Oil Corp, Gannett Corp. and USA Today exe cutives. He also has experience in graphics arts and commercial printing with knowledge of printing technology including typesetting, preparation of camera ready copy and photographs, and other printing methods. A graduate of George Washington University with the B.A. degree in urban planning, Squire has completed additional study at the University of Virginia, the Graduate School of the U.S. Dept, of Agriculture, and at Darby Graphics. His previous experience in cludes successfully marketing for two Peter Squire desktq) publishing service bureaus. Squire was the 'number 1’ ranked sales professional in the history of the firm. Graphic City, Inc. in Washington, D.C., increasing sales over a period of four years. As a qualified desktop publishing consultant he developed and implemented numerous personal com puter applications. As a project leader with Goetz Printing Company, he teamed up with third-party vendors to close orders. He is the recipient of awards from the printing industi7 for publications he has supervised printing. Squire, is married to Anne Squire and they have two children, Patiick age 10, and Daniel, age 7, and reside in Murfreesboro. J^acuCty y^ociLS Dr. David B. Gowler, professor of religion and philosophy was invited to speak at the University of Glasgow in Scotiand to the divinity school faculty and students there October 27-November 3. Susan Fecho, professor of art, participated in a three-person art show at the Hobson Pittman Memorial Gallery in Tarboro, N.C. where she also delivered a lecture on "Printmaking Primer" on Nov. 7. The exhibit entitied "Three Different Voices Connected ... featured Fecho's work along with the works of two other artists. Janet Collins, women’s volleyball coach and physical education teacher, was inducted into the Chowan Sports Hall of Fame on October 26. Dr. Ken Craig, professor of religion and philosophy, presented a paper, "Asking for Rhetoric: Rhetorical Questions in the Deuteronomic History" at the November meeting of SBL. Dr. Craig has also been invited to write an article on Jonah for the Mercer Commentary on the Bible. In addition, he is invited to write an article for the Biblical Illustrator, "Lions in the Ancient Near East." He also has had several book reviews published. Dr. John Davis, professor of English, contributed twelve articles to the Mark Twain Encyclopedia. Dr. Davis and Dr. Ken Wolfskill, chairman of the department of language and literature were selected to read papers at the meeting of Uie Popular Culmre Association of the South.
