Michael Layne Deeds, class of '87, was one of the undercover cops who helped bring down the drug-dealing frats at the University of Virginia last summer. At the age of 23, Mike, a Charlottesville police officer, was so young he had to be recruited from the police academy. Mike says that after graduation from the police academy (12 weeks later), he was placed on the federal drug task force and then entered various fraternities on the campus of the University of Virginia. "I bought various drugs from various fraternity members and was the primary undercover agent on the case," states Mike. An article in the July 1, 1991 People magazine featured the Chowan alumnus and said "armed with an l.D. card from nearby James Madison University and a newly grown beard. Deeds went from fraternity house to fraternity house to hang out and buy drugs. He didn’t need U) be a supersleuth lo succeed." Mike was quoted as saying, "Pretty much every room had some usage, and the team to Eastern Europe this past summer to compete as a part of that group's Christian ministry. In Memoriam EJ. Pruden, Jr., Class of 1942 March 26,1991 Arthur Lee Hackney, Jr., Class of 1969 July 15, 1991 Oscar L. Undercover reports which Mike helped put together said "there were bags of marijuana sitting out in the open, and a bong (water pipe) was being passed around, with people taking turns smoking out of it" The article went on to say if the students were nervous about the police, they didn't show it. Mike said, "Many a night a police officer would ride by (one of the houses) and they'd be in there smoking dope, and they'd laugh. They believed they were untouchable." In March of 1991, law enforcement agents raided three University of Virginia fraternity houses - DU, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Phi Epsilon Pi and arrested twelve students for selling drugs to undercover agents. The student were part of a drug culture in the frat houses along "stately Rugby Road." Mike was photographed for People magazine visiting one of the frat houses after three arrests. He majored in liberal arts and received the associate degree from Chowan. Little did his professors at Chowan realize they were insffucting a future 'undercover cop'! Have we missed you?
