Campus News Annie letters recall early days at Chowan A lifetime of letters chronicling the life of one Chowan alumna from 1856 until 1928 has been collected and published In a new book entitled Annie. Those original letters, many written by Annie Slade Brett, class of 1873, to various people while she was a student at Chowan are now In the permanent collection In the antiquities room of Whitaker Library. Franklin Camp Bacon, a distant relative of Annie Is the editor of the book of letters and visited the campus of Chowan recently to present a copy of the book and the original letters to Chowan. John CouncU Camp, Annie's grandson of Florida, accompanied Bacon to make the presentation to Chowan. Annie grew up In Hertford County north of Murfreesboro in the Maney's Neck area. Her mother was member of the prominent Slade family of WiUiamston. Her father was George Brett, headmaster at Buckhom Academy In Como, N.C. She attended Chowan, gradu ating In 1873, and later married a county doctor. Benjamin Franklin Camp, who had estab lished a practice in the Como area. Annie traveled with her husband to central Florida In 1880 when he gave up his medi cal practice and Joined his broth ers In the lumber manufacturing business. Annie and her husband had a family of four boys and four girls, to which they added two nephews and one niece when their parents died in 1902. The letters which Annie and the members of her family wrrote to each other span 72 years and tell of their growing up, the Civil War. their school days, their courtship and marriage days, the births and deaths, the Joys and sorrows in good times and bad. These letters have survived the years In the hands of the various family members and have been collected and published In a 265- page book. A narrative connects the letters which Include two sketches, one of Maney's Neck. N.C. and one about the northeast quadrant of Florida where Annie lived. Carter is dean of student development Mary Jo Byrd has been named vice president for student enrollment at Chowan College effective Januaiy 13, announced President Jerry Jackson. He aimounced that Winslow Carter, who has served in that position since 1984 will move to the position of dean of students In the office of student development. Mary Jo Byrd "I am delighted to welcome Mary Jo Byrd to the administra tive position of vice president at ChowEm. She brings to the position many fresh ideas and much experience and insight into the changing field of college student enrollment," said Dr. Jackson. "With his counseling background and affection for working with students, he wUl make an excellent dean of stu dents at Chowan.” Byrd has served as dean of students since August 1. 1990, when she came to Chowan from the administrative staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She Is from Llllington, N. C. and holds the B. S. degree in psychology (summa cum laude), minor in French, from Gardner-Webb College. She holds the master's degree in student personnel services from the University of South Carolina. She previously served as director of housing at Mars Hill College, assistant to the director of admissions at Campbell Uni versity, and as dean of admis sions at Tift College In Georgia. As dean of students at Chowan, Byrd supervised all residence haUs and their staffs, stressing the educational nature of residence hall living. She Is married to Dick Rose and they reside in Hertford County. history and the master's degree in education/guidance and counseling. He served for two years In the Southern Baptist Journeyman program In Kenya, Africa. There he taught African history, geography and English at Mombasa Baptist High School for two years. At both Chowan and Campbell, Carter was president of the Baptist Student Union and named to Who's Who lists for outstanding college students. He was a member of the Men's Council and Spanish Club at Chowan, and won the Merit Award and the Silver Feather for service to the campus. He is married to Harriet Rosser Carter and they reside in Roanoke Rapids and have two children, Ernily and Andrew. Winslow Carter Carter is an alumnus of Chowan and Campbell University where he received the BA. In On Campus in Brief Trustees and Visitors en joyed a Joint meeting of those two boards in December. The meeting concluded with buffet dlrmer at the Ella Cobb Camp President's Home. Local photographer Jimmy Belch displayed wildlife pho tography In Green Hall Art Gallery In December; the Tarboro Artist Guild exhibited a collection of art works which are the "essence of North Carolina in Januaiy; and W6, a group of artists in Greenville, N.C. displayed works of art throughout the month of Feb ruary. The Linden Woodwind Quintet performed In Columns on January 24 as one in a se ries of outstanding perfor mances held each year at Chowan through the Roanoke- Chowan Community Concert Series. A Birthday Bash for Mozart was held on January 27 In Daniel Hall featuring pianist Daniel Hannemann and flutist AkalDevSharonne. Students, faculty and community members enjoyed the perfor mance of artists dressed In period costume and then ate birthday cake for Mozart. A fast-paced seminar on taking better pictures filled up Marks Hall Auditorium with area photographers on January 29. The event was sponsored by the Krueger School of Graphic Communications and Kodak. The well-known reggae band AAE performed In the Braves Den on January 31 for over 200 student lovers of reggae. A musical Journey back to the sounds of the Big Band era was provided by the U.S. Air Force Tactical Air Command Jazz Ensemble on February 13. Students were recognized for academic excellence and presented pins for their achievements at the January 21st Honors Convocation.
