Development News Durrett Scholarship receives bequest Elolse Scruggs Durrett, of Richmond, Va., class of 1958, has presented Chowan with a bequest of $100,000 from the estate of William W. Durrett to go toward the Durrett Scholarship, one of the largest scholarships ever established at the college. The Durrett Scholarship was Initially established In 1986 by Mr. and Mrs. William W. Durrett. Mrs. Durrett, a long-time supporter of Chowan, and cur rently a member of the college’s board of visitors. Is originally from Williamsburg, Va. Her husband. BUI Durrett, who passed away In 1991. held sev eral positions with American Tobacco Co. In Richmond before and after serving In the U.S. Navy during World War II. From Spotsylvania County, he resided In Chesterfield County and Cannon Foundation awards grant The Caimon Foundation, Inc. of Concord, N.C. has presented Chowan College a grant of $25,000 to provide an instruc tional materials center for the college. "We are pleased to announce the approval of this grant by the Caimon Foundation," said Clayton Lewis, director of founda tion and corporate relations for the college. "The Instructional materials center is needed at Chowan as we begin to offer four-year degree programs in teacher education in the faU of 1992." The Cannon Foundation was founded by the late Charles A Cannon who was president and chairman of Carmon Mills Com pany for more than fifty years. The foundation provides funding for religious, charitable, scientific, literary and educational purposes. Fletcher Foundation presents gift The A. J. Fletcher Foundation of Raleigh, N.C. has presented a gift of $40,000 to be used for new computer laboratories which are scheduled to be ready for student use in August. ""This gift from the Fletcher Foundation moves Chowan closer to the goal of providing all enter ing freshmen with computer accessibility and training as part of their freshman year at Chowan," commented President Jerry Jackson. ""We are very appreciative of this foundation's support to help provide for needed computer laboratories on the campus of Chowan."" The A. J. Fletcher Foundation is the creation of Alfred Johnston Fletcher (1887-1979). the son of a Baptist minister. Bom in west ern North Carolina, he rose to state-wide prominence as a lawyer, insurance executive and a broadcasting pioneer as president of Capitol Broadcasting Com pany. The foundation provides support to a broad range of organizations In North Carolina with emphasis on education, communications and the arts. Mitchell piano given to college Mrs. Myra P. Mitchell, of Ahoskie, has presented a gift of her family piano to Chowan College. Mrs. MitcheU is an alumna of Chowan, class of 1929. ""We are grateful to Mrs. Mitchell for her kind gift to the college. It is a lovely addition to the Ella Cobb Camp Home and will add musical pleasure to the many events that are hosted in the home," said Dr. Jerry Jackson. The piano was given in "loving memory of her parents. Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Parker. Sr.. of Murfreesboro, and her aunt. Brownie P. Parker. Chowan class of 1901." The piano has been played on several occasions at the president's home recently including the December meeting of the board of trustees and visitors. headed Durrett Construction Corp. as a land developer in south Richmond for over 40 years. He was a member of the Chesterfield Kiwanis Club for over 30 years. He was a distin guished businessman. Involved community member, and active church worker at St. Luke's United Methodist Church where Mrs. Durrett is still a member. Their daughter, Karen, is a student at Barton College. student at Barton College. President Jerry F. Jackson expressed appreciation to Elolse S. Durrett, saying, "This generous gift will help deserving students attend Chowan College. We are grateful to Elolse Durrett for her continued support for Chowan CoUege. As a member of Chowan's board of visitors, a dedicated alumna and leading benefactor of the college, she is to be commended for her kindness to Chowan." Vaughan Scholarship set Higher education is one of the primary areas of interest. The instructional materials center, which will be located in Whitaker Library, will provide integrated media collections arranged by areas including materials on early childhood, elementary language arts. math, spelling, health and physical education. Teaching kits, in structional audiovisuals and equipment for using the materials will also be part of the center. A four-year degree program in education at the elementary (grades K-6) and high school level (grades 9-12) will be offered when Chowan enrolls Its first Junior class in years in the fall of 1992. An Introductory course in educa tion is being offered during the spring semester at Chowan by Education Department Chairman Dr. Charles Bentley. The Irma Vaughan Beale Me morial Scholarship has been es tablished at Chowan College by a gift from Beale's sisters. Maggie L. Vaughan and the late Temperance V. Vaughan, of Franklin. Va. The endowed scholarship, established in memory of Irma Vaughan Beale, who attended Chowan College in the early 1920's. provides funds for Virginians who study at Chowan. "Irma was very fond of Chowan College, where she com- ’pleted two years of high school and one year of college." said Maggie Vau^an. Beale transferred from Chowan to Longwood College In Virginia and later taught school for years. She was married to W. Emory Beale of Suffolk. Beale's sisters also pre sented two college annuals from the years 1921 and 1923 to the Whitaker Library Antlqu ities Room. Battens present gift Dr. and Mrs. James W. Bat ten. of Greenville, have estab lished the Sara Storey Batten Library Endowment for Whitaker Library. The endowment will be used to develop the educational curriculum materials center for the four-year degree teacher education program. Sara Storey Batten, origi nally from Murfreesboro, is a summa cum laude graduate of Chowan, class of 1936. She taught for 11 years before re turning to the University of N. C. at Chapel Hill to receive the M.S. degree in library science in 1960. She then was a librarian in the East Carolina University library for a number of years. In the education department of East Carolina Unlvesity. He received the A.B. and MA. degrees from UNC at Chapel Hill where he also was awarded the Ed.D. degree. "I have always had an interest in libraries and have a special Interest my alma mater, Chowan College," said Mrs. Batten. The Battens are members of Micro Baptist Church in Johnston County, are both retired and reside in Greenville. Mrs. Batten's father. Gladstone Storey, a resident of Guardian Care Nursing Home in Ahoskie. recently celebrated his 100th birthday. Dr. WUlkun B. Martin, ECU dept of education (presenting book) and Dr. J. W.
