New trustees and visitors named to boards
Balentlne
Dr. George L. Balentlne, of
Raleigh, has been elected by the
Baptist State Convention of N.C.
to serve as a trustee. He is the
pastor at Hayes Barton Baptist
Church in Raleigh.
Originally from Arkansas. Dr.
Balentine received the Bj\. from
Ouachita Baptist College; the
B.D. and Ph.D. from The South
ern Baptist Theological Seminary.
He pastored at churches in
Arkansas. Florida, and Georgia,
including the historic First
Baptist Church in Augusta.
Dr. Balentine was instrumen
tal in the founding of Palm Beach
Atlantic College, West Palm
Beach, Florida where he served
as chairman of the religion
department and later as aca
demic dean.
He was president of Shorter
College in Rome, Ga. from June,
1982 until October, 1986 prior to
resigning to accept the pastorate
of Hayes Barton Baptist Church.
Married to Maiy Sue
McDonald Balentine, they have
one daughter, Mary Elizabeth
Mercier of Jacksonville, Florida.
James W. llason, an
agribusinessman from
Harrellsville, has also been
elected by the Baptist State
Convention of N. C. to serve as a
trustee.
Mason is the owner of Mason
Farms and a member of
Harrellsville Baptist Church
where he serves as vice chairman
of the deacon board. He is the

tors of Ridgecroft School.
Mason is a graduate of Wake
Forest University with the B.BA.
degree. He also completed two
years of education at Campbell
University. Married to Jeannie
Mason, they have two children.

Forest University and Jeffrey
Kirk, a senior at Ridgecroft
school.
Cheryl McElheney, of
Roanoke Rapids, has been elected
by the Baptist State Convention
of N.C. to serve as a trustee.
McElheney, an alumna of
Chowan, Is a long-time supporter
of the college having been active
on the Chowan alumni advisory
board.

vice, Inc. in Roanoke Rapids
where her husband Charles
Preston McElheney, Jr. Is owner
and president. Active in civic
affairs, she is the past president
of Roanoke Rapids school PTA's
and served as vice president of
the City Council PTA. She is a
member of the North Carolina

been named an
Honorary Trustee
of Chowan
WBH College, accord
ing to Dr. Jeny F. Jackson.
White was elected to the honor-
aiy position by the trustees at the
recent joint meeting of the college's
boards of trustees and visitors for his
dedicated service and support of
Chowan College
since 1969.
White has held numerous
advisory positions on Chowan's
board of trustees and board of
advisors, including serving on the
committee to raise funds for the
math-science facility. Camp Hall.
The Louise Ange WWte Scholarship is
an endowed scholarship established
by White in honor of his wife.
An alumnus of Wake Forest
University, White has been active in
Htt County serving as charter
member and former chairman of the
board of trustees of Pitt Commimity
College.

McElheney received the
associate of arts degree from
Chowan and also completed
education at Radford College in
Virginia. An active member of
Rosemary Baptist Chureh in

there for 11 years and also plays
in the adult handbell choir.
The McElheneys have three
children. Dawn Porch, of
Roanoke Rapids, who received
the B.S. (Dean's List) from N.C.
Wesleyan; Shawn, a Dean’s List
freshman at UNC Wilmington;
and Charles Preston, 111, a senior
at Roanoke Rapids High School.
O. S. "Buck" Suiter, Jr. has
been named to the Chowan
College Board of Visitors. Suiter,
who has served previous terms
on this board begirming In 1979,
most recently co-chaired the
successful Day for Chowan in the
Roanoke-Chowan area which
garnered over $112,000 In sup
port for the college.
Suiter Is executive vice presi
dent of Centura Bank in Ahoskle.
He is a town councilman and
Mayor Pro Tem for the town of
Ahoskle; chairman of the
Hertford County Industrial
Families Pollution Control Fi
nancing Authority; and a mem
ber of St. Thomas Episcopal
Church Vestry.
Whitehead
A graduate of Weldon High
School, he received the A.B.
degree In business administration
from Duke University and is a
graduate of LSU Banking School
of the South. He is married to
Betty Suiter and th^r have two
children, Virginia Pierce, who
resides in Wilmington and
Overton Stokes Suiter, who
resides in Greenville.
Dr. Millard Eley Whitehead,
Jr., of Murfreesboro, has been
appointed to the Chowan College
Board of Visitors.
Dr. AVhltehead has twenty-five
years of experience In the field of
education as a classroom teacher
In Hertford County Schools,
principal of Murfreesboro Middle
School, and principal of Ahoskle
Graded School. Since 1986 he
has been employed as a class
room teacher with the Bertie
County School System.
He Is a graduate of
Murfreesboro High School and
the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill with the A.B.
degree. He received the MA.Ed.
and Ed.S. degrees from East
Carolina University; and the
M.D. from Nova University.
Dr. Whitehead is a member of
the Murfreesboro Rotary Club
(past President); the
Murfreesboro Baptist Church
where he currently serves as
deacon: and a member of the
board of directors of the
Murfreesboro Historical Associa
tion.

Arnold Scholar
ship has been
established at
Chowan by the
wife and children
of the Rev. J.
Felix Arnold, of
Enfield, a former
trustee of
Chowan College.
Rev. Arnold served as pastor of
Enfield Baptist Church for over 28
years before his retirement in 1975.
He also served as pastor of Belkins,
Va. Baptist Church and assistant
pastor of First Baptist Church of
McComb. Miss. His ministry also
included serving as director of youth
activities at the First Baptist Church
of Winston-Salem.

wonderful family of Rev. J. Felix
Arnold for establishing the Arnold
Scholarship at Chowan," said Dr.
Jerry Jackson, president of the
college. "This endowed scholarship
will serve as a reminder of Rev.
Arnold's wise counsel and gift for
enlisting others in the support of this
institution and its mission In higher
education. It seems fitting that such
service and devotion to the cause of
Christian higher education be
honored and recognized through this
scholarship for students to attend
Chowan."
Arnold has served Chowan
College as a member of the Board of
Trustees for 23 years, ten of those as
chairman of the board. He has
served two terms (eight years) on the
General Board of the Baptist State
Convention of N. C. and 12 years on
the Council of Christian Higher
E>jucatlon. He is the former modera
tor of the North Roanoke Baptist
Assoc, and past president of the
Enfield Lions Club.
A graduate of Mississippi College
and the Southern Baptist Theological
Seminary. Louisville, Ky.. Arnold Is
originally from Shannon. Miss. He
also completed special studies at
Union Theological Seminary in New
York City. During World Wau- II. he
was a chaplain for two years In the
U.S. Navy. He Is married to Frances
Marks Arnold, from Boykins. Va. The
Arnolds' live children are Felice A
Parent Louann A Clarke, Robert
Marks Arnold, John F. Arnold, Jr.,
and Claude C. Arnold. The J. Felix
Arnold Scholarship Fund will provide
funds to any high school students
ranked in the top one-third of their
class and select^ by the scholarship
committee of Chowan College.
