Sports Today Region X District 10 Champions 1991 - 92 Chowan Braves BasketbaU Team Hutchinson. Kansas, was the last stop for the Chowan Braves, Region X and District 10 Champions. The Braves squared off^ against Butler Community College of Kansas in the first round. Earlier this year, Chowan had defeated Butler in the Pepsi NTT held in Ocala, Florida, but this time aroimd the Braves found themselves on the short end of a 68- 64 decision. Plagued by poor shooting in the first half in which the Braves shot only 36 percent, they trailed at intermission 41-28. Led by Wilbert Hunter the Braves came back in the second stanza to pull within one (48-47) with 9:04 remaining in regulation. Buder, however, would move back out to as much as an eight point cushion (59-51) with less than five minutes left. The Braves refused to fold as four straight points from Hunter coupled with a Marlon Jones trey made it a two point game (60- 58) at the three minute mark. Chowan would get as close as (64- 63) with 27 seconds left in the game but a missed free throw forced Chowan to foul to stop the clock and Butler nailed all four of its foul shots down the stretch to hold off the Braves for the win. As was the case in their first game, Chowan's shooting touch was ice cold, as they made only two of their first 17 shots in the first ten minutes against Casper (Wyoming) College to trail by 15 at halftime 41- 26. Casper extended their lead to 21 in the opening moments of the second half, before the Braves put on a patented run outscoring Casper 21- 7 to cut the lead to eight (72-64) with 2:32 remaining. Even with freshman center Algernon Moore (Elizabeth City, NC) tipping in two crucial shots as the game clock wound down, the Braves could get no closer as they ended their season with an outstanding 25-8 record. Baseball Team Braves finish year 17 - 24 The Braves who finished their regular season with a 9-19 Region X record, were the No. 4 seeded team in the Region X Tournament May 7 - 11 at Granite Falls, NC. Saturday, May 9 the Braves took on Southeastern Community College for the fifth time this season in the opening round. As in their four previous encounters, the Braves could not solve their offensive problems presented by the southeastem pitching staff, in dropping a 7-2 decision. Mike Niemotka got the call from Head Coach Jack Moore going three innings without surrendering a nm before running into trouble. With two runners on board. Coach Moore replaced Niemotka with William Chadwick who could not silence Southeastem's bats, giving up three runs over the next two innings before being relieved by Vince Trypuc. Trypuc hurled the final four innings giving up four runs as Chowan fell victim to poor fielding and key hits off the bats of Southeastem. Limited to five hits, the Braves were led by Gary Sasser who stroked a solo homerun in the seventh irming and Alvin Credle who banged out two hits while scoring Chowan's only other run. The following afternoon, Chowan saw its hope PAGE 14 — Chowan Today — Summer, 1992 for a Region X title halted by North Greenville College who knocked off the Braves 4-2. Brian Burke went the distance for the Braves, scattering 11 hits in a solid performance. Mustering only six hits against the Mounties' pitching staff, Craig Owens and Jason Long combined for three of those hits in Chowan's season-ending set-back. Finishing with a 17-24 overall mark, the Chowan Braves who were stocked with freshmen, look to next year optimistically. With the return of Mike Niemotka, Jason Long, Tim Qibome, and Tomas Sanchez, plus a strong contingent of incoming recruits, the Braves will challenge once against next season for Conference and Region honors.
