Lady Braves enter tourney No. 5 seed
The Lady Braves traveled to
Rock Hill, SC, site of the Region X
Tournament, May 1-2. Entering the
tourney as the No. 5 seed, Chowan
faced fourth-seeded North Greenville
College in Friday's opening round.
Freshman hurier Dona Silva was
outstanding scattering two hits, but
was victimized by control problems,
walking six Lady Mounties in the
Braves 4-2 setback. Bad breaks
haunted the Braves as they out-hit
their opponent 10-2, while stranding
seven base runners in nm scoring
situations. Leading the Braves
offensively were Jody Lindstrom,
Susan Fasoldt, Heather Kulow, and
Christin Saltarelli who all collected
two hits each. Fasoldt and Saltarelli
drove in Chowan’s two runs as they
battled North Greenville down to the
final out.
With the opening round loss, the
Lady Braves were forced to play the
first game Saturday morning when
Lady Braves 1991 - 92 Softball Team
they gave third-seeded Anderson
College all they could handle before
dropping a 3-0 decision. Hard luck
righthander Moneka Huntley held the
Trojans in check through five innings
before giving up three runs in the
1 sixth for Anderson's winning margin.
Sara Jones and Heather Kulow
led the Braves offensively with a
base hit each, as Chowan never could
get a run across the plate in the well-
played game.
Following the tournament. Dona
Silva was named to the All-Region X
Team.
The Braves, who finished their
season with a 10-18 overall marie,
lose only two players from this year's
squad. Combine a year of experi
ence, ten returning lettermen, and a
bevy of solid recruits all together,
and what you have will be a program
which will challenge for Conference
and Region honors next spring.
Golf team concludes "winningest" season ever, 12 overall
The Braves hosted the Chowan
Invitational April 16 wirming by six
strokes over the Newport News
Apprentice School. Walking away
with low medalist honors for the
Braves was Don Donatello with a 71,
and Albert Flanagan who was close
behind shooting a 73.
The following day, the Braves
traveled to Suffolk, VA, where they
joined 17 fellow programs in the
Glen Heath Invitational. Fueled by
an excellent performance by Albert
Flanagan, the Braves finished second
by five strokes in the prestigious
tournament. Flanagan who finished
as runner-up, shot an outstanding 76
for Chowan's low medalist honors;
with Don Donatello finishing with a
78 as Chowan brought back more
hardware for their trophy case.
The culmination of an outstanding
season occurred April 19-21 when the
Braves teed up with their Region X
counterparts at the Coggs Glenn

The Braves' termis program
hosted Pitt Community College
Tuesday, March 31, in a non-confer
ence encounter. Despite closely
played matches in all seeds, the
Braves dropped a 8-1 decision to the
visitors from Greenville, NC. Ibon
Valverde was the only Brave to taste
victory, defeating his opponent 6-3,
1-6,7-5.
Two days later. Head Coach
David Gowler's young squad de
feated Wayne Community College 4
1 on the Braves' home court. Chalk
ing up victories for Chowan were
Chris Glasby in singles and the
doubles team of Dennis Dunlow and
Valverde.
Wedriesday, April 15, the Braves
entertained Craven Community
College with only five players due to
injuries. Displaying great intensity
despite having to forfeit two matches
the Braves came from behind to
defeat Craven 5-3. Donnie Davis and
Daniel Brown both won their singles
matches by identical 7-5,7-5 scores.
Brown teamed up with Michael
Moore to win in doubles competition
6-1,6-1, while Davis paired up with
Ibon Valverde to also win in doubles
6_4,7-6,6-3 to insure the Braves
victory.
The following week, the Braves,
for the second consecutive time,
defeated Craven Community College
5-4 but, this time down in New Bern,
NC. Donnie Davis, Mike Moore, and
Daniel Brown all won their single
matches in Chowan's impressive win.
The following afternoon, the
Braves ran their win streak to three,
defeating Coastal Carolina Commu
nity College 7-2 on the Braves' home
court. In singles competition,
Michael Moore, Ibon Valverde,
Daniel Brown, and Andrew Paul
were all victorious, while the doubles
team of Doimie Davis and Chris
Glasby also were winners in
Chowan's successful outing.
The Braves concluded their
season Wednesday, April 19, travel
ing to Newport News, VA, where
they played a veteran Newport News
Apprentice School squad. Despite
suffering an 8-1 setback, the Braves
played competitively in all matches
culminating in a doubles victory for
Donnie Davis and Ibon Valverde in
the final match of the afternoon.

which was shortened to 27 holes due
to rainy conditions, Albert Flanagan
of the Braves shot a total of 109 to
earn co-medalist honors leading
Chowan to a third place showing.
Post season honors were awarded to
Flanagan who was named to the All-
Region C and All-Conference Teams
for his impressive season. By virtue
of his strong performance, Flanagan
will represent Chowan as their
medalist at the national tournament to
be held in Scottsdale, AZ, June 9-12.
The Braves, who finished with an
exceptional 44-12 overall record,
gave veteran Head Coach Bill Sowell
his winningest season ever. With an
excellent, just concluded, season to
build upon, look for Bill Sowell's
squad to challenge for regional and
national honors when the Braves tee
it up again next season.
Chowan sets 1992
gridiron schedule
Head football coach Jim Garri
son recently announced the 1992
football schedule for Chowan
College.
Last season, the Braves finished
with a 4-5 overall record which
marked just the eighth time in
Garrison's 34-year career that the
Braves had not posted a winning
season. Despite the sub-par season.
Garrison still remains as the third
active winningest coach in the
NJCAA as his teams have combined
fora 186-141-12 mark.
The 1992 agenda features a nine-
game slate with four at home and five
on the road.
Chowan opens its annual gridiron
campaign on the road September 5
by traveling to meet Newport News
Apprentice School. Kickoff is set for
