The “Drop Cloth Gang” Invades Murfreesboro During the month of March, Chowan College’s Green Hall Art Gallery featured the works of the Blackwater Artist League of Southampton County, Va., whose members are affectionately known as the “Dropcloth Gang,” as the art department continued its 1992- 1993 Gallery Exhibitions series. The exhibit consisted of over twenty pieces representing several different media and schools of artistic expres sion. The show contained oils, watercolors, acrylics and mixed- media pieces which focus on local subject matter. The works repre sented a variety of styles of paint ing including realistic, naturalistic, abstracted and non-representa- tional. The Blackwater Artist League was organized by seven area artists who met at the Walter Cecil Rawls Library and Museum in Courtland, Va., in April of 1984 to share their CAMVmBRIEFS love for making art. The group adopted the name “Blackwater” after the black color of the rivers and ponds in the area.
