G. Tripp named “Advisor of Year” Gilbert A. Tripp, Jr., associate professor of science, has been named Chowan’s “Advisor of the Year” for the 1992-93 academic session. The announcement was made by Mrs. Austine Evans, director of academic advisement, during the faculty/staff workshop Campus News £ Gilbert Tripp . goes extra mile to help students." at the beginning of the fall term. Tripp, as well as all other full-time faculty members, serve as an academic advisor to a group of students to help them achieve success in their chosen fields of study. Tripp was nominated for the honor by his group of advisees and the final selection was made by an anonymous committee. In making the presentation, Mrs. Evans said that Tripp had “gone the extra mile in his efforts to help students.” She read one quotation written by a student on the nomination form which stated “as a friend, counselor, parent and teacher, he has helped me more than any other person at this college.” Another student wrote “he was our friend as well as our advisor.” Tripp, who joined the faculty in 1967, received his bachelor’s degree from Campbell Universtiy and his master’s from East Carolina University. He has completed additional graduate study at Converse College, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The “Advisor of the Year” award was established in 1990. The two first recipients were Mrs. Dorothy A. Wallace, assistant professor of business, and Dr. G. Kenneth Wolfskill, profes sor of English. Dr. Jane Markert joins faculty in Physical Education Dr. Jane E. Markert, of Independence, MO, has joined the faculty of the Department of Health and Physical Education. She will be teaching courses in kinesiology, research and evaluation, team sports and fitness and nutrition. Dr. Markert received the bachelor’s degree from East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Ohio, and the master’s in physical education from the University of Illinois, in Champaign, IL. She was awarded the Ed.D. in Physical Education by the University of Kansas. The new professor has extensive teaching experience at several colleges and universities to include Central Missouri State University, West Chester University, and Cedar Crest College. She is also a member of a number of profes sional organizations. Markert also has an outstanding record in coaching field hockey teams. She guided Central Missouri’s field hockey team to three state championships, a regional championship, and placed seventh in two national tournaments. While at Kansas University, she coached the team to two Kansas state championships. In addition to field hockey, the new profes sor is qualified to coach tennis, gymnastics, lacross and badminton. Markert Service began as a trustee in 1949 when college was re-opening after World War II. Bob F. Hill, Sr., (right) receives a plaque signifying his appointment as an Honorary Life Truestee from Bynum R. Brown, a member of the board’s executive commitee and a long-time friend of Hill. Hill named honorary life Trustee Bob F. Hill, Sr., of Murfreesboro, who began his service as a member of Chowan College’s governing board more than 45 years ago, has been named Honorary Life Trustee, according to Bob F. Spivey of Windsor, chair man of the Board of Trustees. Hill was first appointed to the Chowan board in 1949 when the college was re-opening after being closed for several years during World War II. He has been a member of the trustees almost continuously since 1972 except for the required one-year periods between terms. A graduate of North Carolina State Univer sity with a degree in engineering. Hill is retired a president of Hill Enterprises, Inc., of Mur freesboro. Active in the Murfreesboro Historical Association, Hill is the recipient of the Caraway Award for Historical Preservation and the Murfreesboro Exchange Club’s “Book of Golden Deeds”. Hill and his wife, Josie, are active in the Murfreesboro Baptist Church, and they are the parents of three children.
