Day for Chowan drive
greatly surpasses goal
The fourth annual Day for Chowan, held on
Thursday, November 18, surpassed the $150,000
goal set by the steering committee by more than
$30,000.
The annual fund-raising event, encompassing
five counties of the Roanoke-Chowan area also
included Ranklin and Southampton County, VA.
A total of $186,477.98
was raised in gifts and
pledges from the 924indi-
viduals and businesses
supporting the drive.
Beginning at 7:45 a.m.,
the 300 volunteers for “Day
for Chowan” began their
day at a breakfast in Thomas
Cafeteria during which time
they heard words of
appreciation from Dr. Jerry
F. Jackson, president, Jeff
Grant, president of the
Senior Class, and Annabella
Adams, the 1993 Home
coming Queen,

breakfast meeting were E.
Vincent Tilson, vice president for development,
who gave general instructions for the day, and
Dallas Taylor, who expressed appreciation for the
work of the steering committee, team captains and
volunteers.
The 1993 “Day for Chowan” chairpersons were
Dallas Taylor, vice president
and city executive of
Wachovia Bank in Ahoskie,
and Mrs. Ann Lee, a
Chowan alumnus of
Murfreesboro.
Approximately 55
friends of the college
volunteered to serve on the
steering committee for “Day
for Chowan”, which is a
significant increase in the
number who served in last
year’s campaign.
The steering committee
members direct activities for
the fund raising day and
enlist team captains who in
turn encourage people in
their respective counties to
get involved in “Day for
Chowan”.
Saving as county
chairpersons for Hatford
County were Dallas Taylor
and Ann Lee; for Gates: B.
H. Brown, Mack Eason and
Mrs. Daisy Perry; for Northampton: C. J. Watson
and Mrs. Emma Gay Stephenson, honorary
chairperson; for Bertie: Robert B. Spivey, David L.
Jennette, Sr., and Nathan R. Copeland.
Serving in Southampton County and Franklin,
VA, were Edgar F. Parker and Robert N. Holt, Mrs.
Texie Camp Marks served as honorary chairperson.

received during “Day for
Chowan” go to the Annual
Fund and are used to help
offset costs involved in
completing the college’s
U'ansition to senior college
status. Gifts may also be
designated for specific
programs and needs.
“Day for Chowan” is a
way to help the five
communities become aware
of the good things that are
happening at Chowan and
the significant impact the
college makes on the area.
Tilson estimates the
financial impact the college
has on the five counties to be approximately $10
million annually. As Chowan completes the
transition to senior college status, additional
students will be attracted from the surrounding
areas, and graduates will return as professionals to
further impact the ftiture of these areas.
More than
300 volunteers
participate in
1993 event
and make
approximately
1,800 calls
to gain support
for the Annual
Fund.
Mrs. Ann Lee of Murfreesboro, and
Dallas Taylor of Ahoskie, were chosen
to head the college's regional fund
raising campaign for 1993.
