—-H Alumni News Homecoming 1993 The ’93 Homecoming King and Queen are presented to the packed stadium during halftime activities of the traditional classic between the Braves and the Ferrum College Panthers. Antwoine Pennix, Jr., a junior from Lynchburg, VA, was named King, while A nab ela Adams, a sophomore from Carnaxide, was crowned as the Homecoming Queen. Making the presentations were Dr. Jerry Jackson, President, and Anita Gaskins, 1992 Homecoming Queen. Jim McGill and his wife, Gail, chat with their son, James, Jr., prior to receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award for 1993 at the Alumni Luncheon. McGill, Class of ’62, receives Distinguished Alumni Award James C. McGill, a native of Clinton, received the 1993 Distinguished Alumni Award from Chowan College during Homecoming activities. The award was presented during the annual alumni luncheon by Dr. Jerry F. Jackson, president of the college. “We are grateful to Jim McGill for his continu ing interest in, and support to, his alma mater,” said Dr. Jackson, “and also for his service as a member of our Board of Visitors and the Braves Club.” McGill, a member of Chowan’s Class of 1962, is president and chief executive officer of Fmancial First Federal Savings Bank in Burlington. He has also served as executive vice president and western regional executive for Fu-st Union National Bank. A veteran of military service, McGill served as an engineering instructor at Fort Belvoir, VA. While a student at Chowan, McGill majored in pre-education and was a member of both the 1%1 PAGE 10—CHOWAN TODAY, Winter 1993 and 1962 football teams. After receiving the associate of arts degree from Chowan, McGill was awarded the bachelor’s degree by East Carolina Univasity. He completed graduate work at the University of North Carolina School of Banking and Executive Program. McGill is a member of Board of Visitors which serves as an advisory group to the trustees and administration of the college. He is also a director of the Braves Club which promotes the college’s athletic programs. Active in community affairs, McGill is president of the Alamance County Coalition Against Drug Abuse, a director of Burlington Downtown Corporation, and a past president of the United Way Campaign, He is also president of the Williams High School Athletic Association. McGill and his wife, Gail, have two children, Karen and James, Jr. /Uunrni Happehings Hilliard Greene, Jr., Class of 1954, vice president of Commercial Printing Co., retired August 31,1993. Greene joined the firm in 1959 and was instrumental in the more than six-fold growth of the company during his tenure. He oversaw the complete conversion of the company’s plant from letterpress to offset technology and witnessed three generations of ownership. The company held an Open house in Greene’s honor on the afternoon of August 20,1993. Earl Wright, Class of 1956, is now director of business affairs for Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern. The father of three children, he is also serving as a coimty commissioner for Craven County. Mrs. Carolyn Davis Sanders, Class of 1956, is assistant principal at Westminister Academy in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Jesse Allen, Class of 1984, has been selected as one of three finalists to compete for the 1993 North Carolina Farm Bureau Young Farmer and Rancher Achievement Award. Allen is owner and operator of North Slope Hog Farm in Pantego where he has a 120 sow, farrow-to-finish operation and also grows crops on a total of 1,280 acres. Matthew S. Chappell, Class of 1988, has returned from a three-week trip to Japan where he traveled with Yoko Hashimoto, also of the Class of 1988. Yoko works in Toyko for Lotus, Inc., Japan. Matt resides in Norfolk and manages Palette’s Cafe in the Chrylser Museum. Wendi Ann Koob of Williamsburg, VA, and Christopher Ivey Leigh of Leland, both graduates in the Class of 1987, were united in marriage on July 10. The bride is in management training with a Williamsburg firm and the bridegroom is a diamond consultant with a jewelry store in Newport News, VA. W, Arthur Riddle, DI, Class of 1972, currently resides in Winston-Salem and was recently elected as an officer and board member of the Carolinas Association for Passenger Trains.
