Alumni News John Robert Settle, III, is now residing in Norfolk, VA, where he is an auditor with the Virginia Department of Taxation. He was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Chowan Alumni Association. His wife, Gail Clybum Settle, is an agent with Clybum Insurance Agency. The couple has two sons. Sharon Apsley-Bieber has two children and resides in Newport News, VA. She is a medical secretary with Hampton Roads Neurology, Inc. The Rev. Robert “Bob" Ballance, Jr., is pastor of First Baptist Church in Spruce Pine. He was graduated from Mars Hill College and Southeast ern Seminary, and is scheduled to receive his Ed.D. degree in adult education from N. C. State University next May. Unda Paul Martin is assistant to the Dean for Library and Learning Services of Marymount University. She and her husband live in Warrenton and they are part owners of a successful printing firm. James Edward Blizzard, Jr., is associated with Newport News (VA) Public Schools as a teacher and printei Nicholas John Levay, Jr., received his bachelor’s degree from RTT and is now director of sales for William Byrd Press in Richmond, VA. He is also chairman of the Krueger Forum, an advisory group for Chowan’s School of Graphic Communications. Kenneth Clary now resides in Lawrenceville, VA, where he is a program assistant with the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Spencer M. Dillard lives in Richmond, VA, where he is sales manager for Harco Graphic Products. Charles F. Fraser is a primary school educator for Newport News (VA) Schools. ‘Treddie” is married and lives in Hampton. Frances Campbell Harrell lives in Halifax where she is a senior co-manager with a fast food restaurant. Laura L Lathrop (Farrenkopf) is the mother of two children and resides in Suffolk, VA. She is a contract specialist for the Department of the Navy. Ron H. Lilley resides in Greensboro and is associated with S&ME, Inc., as a project manager. Sheri Wiley Lowe is the mother of two daughters and resides in Gatesville. She is a teacher’s assistant with the Gates County Board of Education. Usa Mills received her bachelor’s degree after transferring from Chowan and is a teacher with St. Christopher’s Child Care Center in Portsmouth, VA. Daphnie Blake Nifong is a student at Rochester Institute of Technology and expects to receive his degree next May. Joseph C. Patrick, Jr., and his wife Mary Ann, live in Midlothian, VA. He is territory sales manager for Anchor Chemi cal Company. Alkeviades S. Theodorakis is a claims adjuster for Utica Mutual Insurance Company. He and his wife have one son and they live in Richmond, VA. The Rev. S. Keith Vaughan is senior minister of Carey Baptist Church in Henderson. He is the father of two children and active in community and civic affairs. Craig Vick is now Director of Personnel at Chowan College. He resides in Ahoskie and is completing work for his master’s degree at East Carolina University. Marian George Walker has one daughter and resides in Wicomico Church, VA. She is associated with George Noblett, Inc., as a sales representative. Matthew White is director of fitness and exercise physiologist for the Downtown Athletic Club in Staten Island, NY. After graduating from Chowan, Matt received degrees at Old Dominion University and Long Island University. ‘Zen ye€trs after Chovuan The Class Alumnus named president of Arbitration Association The American Arbitration Association (AAA), the leading center of private dispute resolution in the world, has announced that William K. Slate, n, has been selected as president of the public service organization which administers over 60,000 arbitration and mediation cases a year. Slate, a graduate in the Class of 1963, is a former member of the Board of Visitors and currently resides n Philadelphia. Slate will officially join the American Artibration Assocaiton in Febmary, 1994, as President-elect and will take Association as chief executive officer at the association’s annual meeting in April. Founded in 1926, the AAA has been a pioneer in alternative dispute resolution, millions of arbiuation clauses in a wide variety of business, insurance and labor contracts provide for arbiU'ation proceedings to be administered by the AAA. Through its 36 regional offices, the AAA also provides mediation services and hundreds of education and U-aining programs each year. Slate is currently president of the Justice Research Institute, which specializes in interdisciplinary research and management consulting for courts and legal organizations. An attorney with an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the Univasity of Pennsylvania, Slate served as director of the congressionally mandated Federal Courts Study committee which conducted the most sweeping inquiry of courts in America’s history. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute, and held leader ship positions in the American Bar Association and the American Judicature Society. He is also founder of the Council for Court Excellence. Associate’s Degree in 1963 from Chowan; served with Board of Visitors WILLIAM K. SLATE, HI Thompson named to Hall of Fame at UNC Charlotte Richard L. Thompson, of Cullowhee, was inducted into the UNC, Charlotte, Alumni Associa tion’s Hall of Fame Oct. 9. Thompson, a graduate in the Class of 1961, was the recipient of Chowan’s Distinguished Alumni Award in several years ago. He became the 19th graduate to be honored by the UNC-Charlotte’s alumni association, which now numbas nearly 41,000. Thompson was honored for a distinguished career in education. Since 1992, he has been director of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching in Cullowhee. Prior to taking that post, he was superintendent of education for the State of Mississippi for three years and implemented an advanced lead ership development program that targeted Mississippi school adminisUa- tors. He also has served as superintendent of Tupelo, Miss., Public Schools, su perintendent of Lexington City Schools, and principal of several high schools. He was assistant to the dean and insuuctor of curriculum in the College of Education at UNC Charlotte from 1976- 78. He has been a high school teacher and coach and worked briefly in the textile indusUy. In 1990, E>r. Thompson was selected as one of the top 100 administrators in North America and in 1992 he was re cipient of the Mississippi Association of Educators “Friend ofEducation” Award. A native of Warren County, Thomp son earned an associate’s degree at Chowan, a bachelor’s degree at Elon College, a master’s degree in education at UNC Charlotte and a doctorate in education at UNC Greensboro.
